Here at British Vogue, it’s fair to say we’re well-acquainted with Meghan Markle’s signature style. Since her royal exit, she’s returned to her Californian roots, with neutral cashmere and crisp linen shirting forming the cornerstone of her Montecito-casual wardrobe. But this week, the Duchess of Sussex gave us something a little different: a wink to her former royal life, perhaps, in the form of a very Sloaney houndstooth moment, worn during a solo outing to New York for a performance of Gypsy.

In fact, her Carolina Herrera houndstooth skirt is a piece that we could easily imagine in Princess Diana’s wardrobe. The late royal famously wore a similar style herself to Princess Eugenie’s christening in 1990, paired with a red Moschino houndstooth blazer. Meanwhile, the current Princess of Wales is also a noted fan of the print, sporting an eye-catching red-and-white houndstooth coat by Catherine Walker in 2018 – which many took to be a tribute to Diana.

Rather than go full ’80s kitsch, though, Meghan teamed her houndstooth skirt with a simple black button-down shirt, which is much more in keeping with her day-to-day Californian wardrobe. Might we see more royal nods creeping back into the Duchess of Sussex’s wardrobe? Only time will tell.
