Kate Middleton and Prince William celebrate their 14th anniversary today and the pair are on the isle of Mull for the milestone. William and Kate arrived in Tobermory earlier this afternoon, where they were greeted by crowds of excited fans who lined the streets.

While in Mull, the pair are reported to be staying at a self-catering cottage as they take on a busy schedule during their short stay. It’ll be a nice change for the hands-on busy parents as they get a rare bit of time to spend together on their own away from Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

However they bunk up in the cottage, Kate and William have a rather unusual sleeping arrangement at their home in Kensington Palace. As we’ve previously reported, the Royal couple don’t have an upstairs bedroom.

The Prince and Princess of Wales don’t share much about their life behind closed doors, however, a floor plan of their townhouse in Apartment 1A of the famous London building shows where the bedrooms are located.

Despite William and Kate and their three children moving to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate in September 2022, their former home – which is still listed as the family’s official residence – has always been a bit of a mystery.

The main bedroom they sleep in is on the ground floor of Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace instead of downstairs in the basement.

This apartment, which was once the home of Princess Margaret, has 20 rooms, four floors, its own lift, gym, and nine rooms for staff.

Royal author Christopher Warwick, who passed away in 2022, previously explained why it’s called an ‘apartment’ on True Royalty’s Royal Beat.

He said: “All of these royal residences at Kensington Palace are called apartments, which of course makes people immediately think they are flats like the American term for an apartment.

“They are not. If you think of Kensington Palace in a way, it is built around three courtyards. If you kind of think of them as being these wonderful red brick terrace houses. Because they are all joined, but separate houses.”

The royal couple’s Adelaide Cottage in Windsor is a cosy four-bedroom home with lots of history.

The property is situated on the Crown Estate’s private Royal park. It was built in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, King William IV’s wife and has a rather interesting history.

Queen Victoria liked to have her breakfast at Adelaide Cottage – but it’s also known for being the house occupied by Group Captain Peter Townsend, who embarked on a famous – but doomed – love affair with Princess Margaret.

Margaret was devastated when she was not allowed to marry Townsend due to the fact he was already divorced.

While they are in Mull, the royal couple’s foundation will provide funds to refurbish two community halls and they will carry out a raft of engagements, kicking off with a visit to Aros Hall, a local community hub in Tobermory.

The future King and Queen will also head to Tobermory Producers Market and then to a croft and restaurant on the west coast of Mull.
