Prince Harry engaged to Meghan Markle in late 2017 with a ring featuring a central, cushion-cut diamond, plus two smaller diamonds sourced from a bracelet belonging to Princess Diana.

For their first anniversary, Harry gifted Meghan a diamond eternity ring and replaced her original gold band with a diamond pavé version.

Fans have speculated on several other updates since.

Meghan Markle’s style has always been chic, and she particularly loves simple, sleek, high-end pieces. She’s also been known to send subtle messages through her clothing, including supporting brands she loves. The same careful thoughtfulness applies to her everyday jewelry, from her classic Cartier Love bracelet the gold Cartier watch she inherited from her mother-in-law Princess Diana. But no piece holds more significance than her engagement ring.

The original piece, which has a sweet story and some impressive significance, has been an extraordinarily popular style among royal fans and jewelry aficionados alike. On top of that, the ring’s been updated since 2017, which has been the source of much speculation—and appreciation—for Meghan’s evolving style.

Keep reading to learn all the details of Meghan’s ring, from its very first appearance to a potential new look in her new Netflix show.

    A Casual, Surprise Engagement

In 2017, Harry and Meghan announced they were engaged. In a BBC interview at the time, and later in Harry’s memoir Spare, the couple shared that they were having a quiet night at home (Meghan was roasting a chicken!) when Harry popped a bottle of champagne, set up a blanket and electric candles outside the walls of Nottingham Cottage, and got down on one knee. “‘Spend your life with me? Make me the happiest guy on the planet?'” he remembers asking. Meghan later recalled in the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, “He’s down on one knee and I was like, ‘Yes!’ We were so joyful and excited,” adding, “I was like, ‘Ah, we’re doing this!'”

    Stones With Special Significance

Harry shared that he had designed the ring with Cleave & Company: the central, cushion-cut diamond was sourced (conflict-free) from Botswana, where the couple had their third date, and weighs an estimated three carats. The two smaller diamonds flanking the central stone came from a bracelet belonging to Diana, Princess of Wales (and Prince William apparently gave permission for Harry to use them). The estimated weight of the whole ring is 3.8 carats and the estimated retail cost is $300,000 to $350,000. Of course, given the diamonds from Princess Diana’s bracelet, some experts argue that Meghan’s ring is priceless.

    A Meaningful Wedding Band

When Meghan and Harry were married in 2018, Meghan’s new Cleave & Company wedding band also carried special significance. It was a simple band made of Welsh gold and was reportedly a gift from Queen Elizabeth. The material was particularly noteworthy: Per People, the royal family has been using pure Welsh gold for wedding rings dating all the way back to the Queen Mother in 1923. It made a perfect companion to the original engagement ring.

At their one-year anniversary, Harry worked with jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz to replace the simple gold band with a diamond pavé version. He also commissioned a new diamond eternity ring: the inside band was set with peridot (Harry’s birthstone), emerald (Meghan’s birthstone), and sapphire (Archie’s birthstone—their first child who was born earlier that same year).

After a few events where Meghan left her engagement ring at home, eagle-eyed viewers noticed a subtle change to it when she wore it to the Invictus Games in 2022. If you look carefully at the side, there appear to be some small diamonds on the underside surrounding the center setting. But then Meghan showed up to public events in 2023 with her original ring; Reports around this time indicated that the ring had had a loose setting and was being fixed, so it’s unclear if this was a replica or another ring.

During Meghan’s 2025 Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, viewers noticed that her ring looked different yet again. Specifically, some reports suggest she might have a new emerald-cut center stone. The seemingly new cut features sharper corners on the side, instead of her original cushion cut. Fans even claim they can spot the new ring in some of her Instagram posts. But at this point, the update hasn’t been confirmed. And it’s also possible that a specialist could have changed the setting to help the center stone look more squared off, or she’s wearing a replica while she cooks to avoid damaging the real ring.

In the 2017 BBC interview, Meghan raved about the ring, saying, “It’s beautiful, and he designed it, it’s incredible.” She noted, “Everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [Princess Diana’s stones] and obviously not being able to meet his mom, it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us,” adding, “To be able to have this, which sort of links where you come from and Botswana, which is important to us, it’s perfect.”

She hasn’t discussed any changes to her ring; in the 2022 Omid Scobie biography Finding Freedom, the book indicates that it was Prince Harry’s idea to make the first changes to Meghan’s engagement ring band. Lorraine Schwartz told Scobie, “He’s the loveliest person ever. So romantic, so thoughtful,” and Scobie added, “So much so that Harry also thought to have Lorraine resize and reset Meghan’s engagement ring with a new diamond band.”

Sometimes Meghan wears her wedding ring first, then her engagement ring, and finally her eternity ring. Other times, her engagement ring is layered over her wedding ring, with her eternity ring on bottom. She’s also opted to leave the engagement ring or eternity ring at home, going with a simpler stack or just her wedding band.

When she’s traveling, she might not even bring the more expensive pieces with her: A source confirmed that Meghan had left her engagement and eternity ring at home for her and Harry’s royal tour of South Africa in 2019, for example. This makes sense, as there’s less likelihood for the ring to be damaged during travel (and the source noted at the time she wanted to be more “low-key” during meet and greets during the tour). Other royals do something similar: Kate Middleton, for example, has been known to leave her own engagement ring at home during events where there might be sports activities or a hospital visit.

Regardless of how she wears it, Meghan appears to treasure her engagement ring. And so do a lot of other people: Meghan’s engagement ring is still the most-searched celebrity engagement ring in the world, according to a 2024 Ramsden’s Jewellery study and reports by People. Each month, Meghan’s ring generates 51,283 searches a month, with Princess Diana and Kate Middleton’s rings coming in second and third most-searched, respectively.
