As Duchess Meghan recently revealed on her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, there’s a certain expectation as to how you should dress when you’re a royal—so much so that Meghan continued to wear six-inch heels even when she was pregnant with her son, Prince Archie. Of course, there are moments when you can play outside the rules, especially when you’ve been in the game for some time. Take Queen Letizia, who always manages to keep us on our toes, especially when it comes to her footwear game.

While she’s no stranger to a good pair of pumps, the Spanish royal keeps a healthy mix of shoes in her rotation, from chunky black loafers to metallic strappy sandals and patent leather Mary Janes. Now, she’s ushering in the start of wedge season.

The queen visited the municipality of Guadalupe with her husband, King Felipe VI of Spain, this morning, where she looked like the picture of a Mediterranean summer in another eye-popping look.

For the outing, Letizia wore a floral-print maxi shirtdress that featured renderings of resplendent flowers in orange, purple, blue, and more. The breezy design buttoned up in the front and Letizia rolled the sleeves partway up her arms. Meanwhile, she matched the tones of her dress by popping on a pair of royal blue diamond drop earrings.

But it was her shoes that really caught our eye. Taking a cue from other royals like Princess Kate, the queen stepped out in a set of espadrille wedges that came in a soft, creamy gray, with leather straps the closed around the ankles and matching silk laces that wove through the toe caps.

I’d like to think that if Letizia’s look could speak, it would be saying: Thank God wedge season is finally upon us.
