Princes William and Harry have always been under scrutiny, both for being members of the monarchy and because of their personal differences. The princes grew up under the same roof, but they followed very different paths. People close to Princess Diana insist that the contrast between them goes beyond what is obvious.

Those who knew Lady Di and were close to her state that the relationship between Harry and William has been complex since childhood. The latest statements reinforce this idea. The emotional distance between them keeps growing, and now the reason is better understood.

The character that has always separated them

According to Andrew Morton, the biographer responsible for Diana’s memoirs, Harry is the son who most reflects his mother’s spirit. He described him as “friendly” and transformed after his time in the army. He added that “he’s always going to have that aura of Diana surrounding him.”

The biographer emphasized that Harry has much of Lady Di’s “generous character,” something that connects with the public in a special way. In his words, he’s “the young man we all desired him to be.” His open personality makes him more approachable and emotionally transparent.

William, on the other hand, has always been more reserved and structured. Morton indicated that Diana described him as “more Germanic, more solid” in his way of being. That difference marked the distant bond between the brothers from a very young age.

A fracture that didn’t start with Meghan

Harry revealed that the estrangement with William didn’t begin when he left the royal family. According to what he shared in his book, at Eton College, William asked him to pretend not to know him. “He hated when people thought we came as a package,” he wrote.

The prince recently expressed his desire for reconciliation during an interview with the BBC. “It’d be nice to reconcile,” he said, although he acknowledged that “if they don’t want to, it’s totally up to them.” That statement made it clear that the willingness exists, but it’s not shared.

    Brief encounters, long silences

In August 2024, both attended the funeral of their uncle Lord Robert Fellowes, Diana’s brother-in-law. It was the first meeting after more than a year without seeing each other. Before that, they were together at Charles III’s coronation, but without speaking to each other in public.

They also shared space at the funeral of their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 2022, accompanied by their wives. None of these events led to a real rapprochement between them. The distance between them expresses much more than any statement.

What Andrew Morton said brings the focus back to a broken relationship that many still hope to see heal. Diana, without a doubt, left a mark on both, but each carries her legacy in a different way. What was once a natural bond between brothers now seems only the story of two distant acquaintances.
