Princess Kate and Meghan Markle may have once seemed to get along well, but it seems their relationship has not been plain sailing for quite some time. While it is believed the sister-in-laws have had minimal contact since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit royal life in 2020, it seems that the rift began years before.
It was reported that the pair had an argument before Meghan and Harry’s 2018 wedding about the fitting of Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress. This has since created a divide between royal fans, with people siding with either Meghan or Kate.
While both have a strong fan base, if the number of Instagram followers are anything to go by, then royal fans have made their feelings about who they are siding with clear.
This is because Meghan Markle’s Instagram account, which launched in January, has just three million followers, while Princess Kate and Prince William’s official Instagram account has a much larger following of 16.8 million – over five times as many.
Princess Kate and Prince William’s Instagram account also has more followers than the Royal Family’s official Instagram account, which documents the work of King Charles and Queen Camilla, as well as other senior royals.
While Kate and William may have more Instagram followers than Meghan, a report by Newsweek found that Meghan’s Instagram reels have had more views in 2025 than Prince William and Princess Kate’s, despite having less followers.
Jack Royston, Chief Royal Correspondent for Newsweek, believes this could be because Meghan’s Instagram account is one of the only ways update about her can be found, while Princess Kate’s work is well-documented by the press.
He wrote: “One reason Meghan’s posts gain more audience than William and Kate’s despite her lower follower count may be that her Instagram is the only place to get updates directly from her.
“By contrast, not only do William and Kate have other social media accounts but most of their videos show royal engagements that were also covered live by British journalists and photographers from the royal rota.
“Their Instagram reels are therefore a stylised, more curated version of content already in the public domain, and are less frequently the original source for major announcements.”
Princess Kate and Meghan Markle are not believed to be on talking terms anymore.
