The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has been forced to temporarily suspend her public activities after an event intended to honor her work was postponed due to the tense social climate in Los Angeles. The highly anticipated Night of Wonders gala, organized by the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC), originally scheduled for Saturday, June 14, was canceled in response to the civil unrest currently being experienced in the city.
The gala, considered one of the most prestigious evenings on the Los Angeles philanthropic and cultural circuit, was to have Meghan as guest of honor, recognizing her outstanding work in favor of women, disadvantaged communities, and social equity through the Archewell Foundation. Her attendance also marked a symbolic return to her hometown.
However, amid widespread protests related to recent operations by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the presence of the National Guard on the streets, organizers decided to prioritize safety, empathy, and the museum’s community role.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 10, the president and director of NHMLAC, Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, explained the decision: “As an institution ‘of, for, and with Los Angeles,’ our responsibility during these difficult times is clear: to serve as a community resource focused on healing and unity, not celebration.”
She added: “Los Angeles needs us to channel our energy into supporting our neighbors and demonstrating the values that strengthen our city and our county.”

The decision was made by consensus among the board of directors, the museum’s management, and the event partners, who “unanimously agreed” that postponing the gala was the only possible response given the “current circumstances of the community.”
Although a new date has not yet been set, NHMLAC assured that its daily operations and educational programs will continue as normal.
According to Dr. Bettison-Varga, their work “to promote community well-being and expand opportunities, especially for marginalized communities,” embodies the values of the museum, particularly in relation to its science education programs such as STEM and STEAM Pathways.
The event was also going to bring together prominent figures from the city’s scientific, cultural, and philanthropic spheres, all allies of the type of causes that the Duchess has embraced since leaving the royal family as an active member.
