King Charles and Queen Camilla also shared an insider look at the day’s events on their official Royal Family Instagram account. King Charles looked in high spirits as he prepared to ride out in the first carriage – in what is being viewed as a concession to both his age and his cancer treatment, His Majesty chose not to ride on horseback. Offering a carrot to one of the horses, the King could be seen beaming as he salutes on the way out of Buckingham Palace. Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, also feature in the video, with the Duchess matching Catherine’s colour palette in a teal Beulah London dress. Joining them? The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester: the diligent, though often unsung, royals took their place on the balcony for the Red Arrows flypast, a reminder that they serve as working royals under the King’s stripped-down monarchy.

Indeed, the traditional wave to the crowds from Buckingham Palace saw the usual suspects gather together – the King and the Queen, the Waleses, the Edinburghs, Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Laurence, and the Gloucesters. Eagle-eyed royal watchers caught a glimpse of the Duke of Kent, 89, sharing a warm moment with the Princess of Wales as the pair stood side-by-side on the balcony, and the Duke could also be seen videoing events on a mobile phone from behind the palace window. The pair have plenty in common, having both worked closely with Wimbledon tennis as president and patron, respectively.
