Kate Middleton was regal in teal at Trooping the Colour, but there was a deeper meaning to what she wore.

On June 14, the Princess of Wales, 43, attended King Charles’ official birthday parade in London with Prince William and their kids, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. Princess Kate made a fashion statement in an aqua Catherine Walker coat dress with a white collar and lapel, topped with a Juliette Botterill floral hat.

She accessorized with an Irish Guards Regiment Brooch and the Bahrain Pearl Drop earrings from Queen Elizabeth’s jewelry collection, making a fashion statement that felt familiar to royal watchers.

The color of Princess Kate’s outfit exactly matched the teal plumes worn in the bearskin caps by the Irish Guards. The Princess of Wales is the Colonel of the Irish Guards, one of the seven regiments of the Household Division that participate in the Trooping the Colour tradition, and her decision to wear aqua was a show of support.

The shade name of the Irish Guards’ plume is technically St. Patrick’s blue, connecting to the color of the mantle and sash of the Order of St. Patrick.

King Charles named his daughter-in-law Kate as Colonel of the Irish Guards in 2022, and she has paid tribute to the unit through fashion previously. For her first St. Patrick’s Day Parade with the guards as their honorary colonel in 2023, Princess Kate popped in another teal coat dress by Catherine Walker, linking to the blue plumes.

Kate’s regal teal at Trooping the Colour on June 14 also felt reminiscent of a previous look worn by the late Princess Diana.

In 1992, Princess Diana popped in a lookalike turquoise and white suit by Catherine Walker and Philip Somerville hat while visiting the Heliopolis War Cemetery in Cairo, Egypt.

Princess Kate is known to pay homage to her late mother-in-law through fashion and recently channeled Diana’s iconic style at a ship christening in Scotland. One of her go-to jewels is also an heirloom from Princess Diana, as Prince William proposed to Kate in 2010 with his late mother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

Bethan Holt, Fashion News and Features Director of The Daily Telegraph, previously told PEOPLE that Kate’s sartorial salutes to Diana are always carefully coordinated.

“I think we have seen lots of examples where the reference is very intentional and I think that Kate uses fashion to pay tribute to Diana in a very positive way,” Holt told PEOPLE, adding that Prince William “has always been very conscious of his mother as a style icon.”

“I think that William and Kate between them might have decided that actually on some occasions it’s a really nice thing for Kate to reference the fact that Diana is still a fashion muse today and to do that through her own clothes,” she said.

At Trooping on Saturday, Princess Charlotte matched her mom in aqua, creating a sense of cohesion between them.
