An actor whose career has been put back in the limelight in recent times is Demi Moore. Starring in films such as St Elmo’s Fire and About Last Night in the 1980s introduced her to the wider audience, but a string of dramatic, passionate, and often underrated performances in the early ’90s in Ghost, A Few Good Men, and Disclosure allowed Moore to truly show that she knows what she’s doing, cementing her place amongst Hollywood’s biggest names. Starring alongside actors like Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson, she managed to hold her own and them some.
Many actors decide to enter the industry in front of the camera because they have an unwavering passion for telling impactful stories. Creative expression and the belief that an artist is contributing to something bigger than themselves are always important. However, things don’t always go to plan in an industry as ruthless as Hollywood.
All good things come to an end, and the end of Moore’s time of critical acclaim ground to a halt all too soon. Starting with The Scarlet Letter in 1995, Moore’s next couple of years leading Striptease, The Juror, and GI Jane landed massive blows on her reputation within the industry. The amphitheatre of cinema’s audiences and critics alike eventually grew too loud, leading to her taking a break from acting throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s.
Despite being out of the spotlight, there was, unsurprisingly, still constant chatter about what the future held for her during her hiatus. One figure who voiced their opinion was Mike Medavoy, the CEO of Phoenix Pictures, who said that “Nobody’s going around saying she’s not worth anything or that she’s not a good actress,” he continued, ”but I certainly wouldn’t pay her the kind of money she was earning.”
Producer Irwin Winkler doubled down on this perspective by saying, “There are limited opportunities for women in that age group.” Medavoy didn’t count Moore out entirely, however, having the belief that “She’ll come back,” and “She’s a good enough actress for it.”
Her return to the mainstream came with Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in a supporting role rather than one of the three front-runners. She took on subsequent roles in Half Light, Flawless, and Margin Call, among others, but didn’t return to the lauded territory she once reached. In 2024, however, Moore starred in what’s already regarded by many as her career-best performance in The Substance, which is poignant in many ways for the actor.
The role won her a Golden Globe, but The Substance‘s plot also reflects Moore’s career to some extent. Her character takes extreme measures to become a younger, stereotypically perfect woman that the masses would love, echoing the idea that the older you get, the fewer roles you have available to you. Thankfully, Moore, alongside plenty of other female actors, continues to dispel this idea, keeping the door open for actors to deliver exceptional performances no matter what stage of life they’re in.
