Queen Elizabeth II was quietly devastated by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal life and felt personally slighted by her grandson’s behavior, according to newly surfaced notes from a trusted royal confidante. The late monarch “was not at all content” with how the so-called Megxit unfolded, a set of private recollections shared by her cousin, Lady Elizabeth Anson, revealed.
The revelations, drawn from interviews conducted shortly before Lady Elizabeth’s death in 2020, offer a rare glimpse into the Queen Elizabeth’s emotional response to one of the most turbulent royal exits in modern history.
“She said she was not at all content,” reads one note, while another adds, “Harry was rude to her for ten minutes.”
Fight Between Queen Elizabeth And Meghan Markle
Tensions between the monarch and Meghan Markle reportedly surfaced as early as 2018, in the run-up to the couple’s Windsor wedding. According to Lady Elizabeth, the Duchess of Sussex declined to share any details about her wedding dress with the Queen- a break from royal tradition.
“Meghan wouldn’t tell her [Queen Elizabeth II] about the wedding dress,” Lady Elizabeth said. The Queen ultimately found the Givenchy gown, with its bateau neckline and three-quarter-length sleeves, too showy- especially for someone who had been previously married.
The notes revealed that Queen Elizabeth thought the dress was “flamboyant” and “not fit for a divorcee.” Meghan Markle had previously been married to Hollywood producer Trevor Engelson. As for Meghan Markle herself, Lady Elizabeth said, “The jury was out on whether she likes Meghan.”
Megxit And Queen Elizabeth’s Disappointment
When Harry and Meghan announced their decision to step back from royal duties in early 2020 and later relocated to California, it sparked global headlines.
“I was shocked when the Queen told me this, how she was so saddened,” Lady Elizabeth recounted. The Queen had relied on her cousin for emotional counsel during difficult moments and often confided in her about family tensions. The Megxit episode was especially wounding for Queen Elizabeth, she said.
