Kate, the Princess of Wales, may be known for her grace and composure, but during a poignant outing in 2018, it was her genuine warmth that stole the show, along with a royal rule-bending hug.

Seven months pregnant with Prince Louis, Kate was visiting the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London when she spotted a familiar face in the crowd: Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent, the midwife who helped deliver Princess Charlotte and Prince George.

Breaking traditional royal protocol, which typically prohibits hugging, Kate beamed and embraced the midwife, a touching moment that spoke volumes about the bond they shared.

“Do I seem calm? Of course I do,” Kate reportedly said afterwards, reflecting the same composed yet compassionate persona she’s become known for throughout her royal life.

Though royal etiquette dictates bows and curtseys, experts say members of the Royal Family – can and do – make exceptions for meaningful moments.

“The Queen once told Michelle Obama that royal protocol is rubbish,” royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams recalled, “meaning the Royal Family adapts when it’s appropriate.”

The visit highlighted Kate’s growing commitment to maternal health.

Since then, she has deepened her advocacy, even undertaking private ‘work experience’ in a maternity ward in 2019 and writing heartfelt tributes to midwives.

Professor Dunkley-Bent has since risen to become England’s first-ever Chief Midwifery Officer, credited with promoting safety and compassionate care across the NHS.

Kate’s heartfelt connection to maternity care remains strong.

From candid podcast appearances to hospital visits and joint engagements with Princess Anne, she continues to shed light on the struggles and triumphs of motherhood, making her not just a royal but a relatable role model.
