Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, may be royals, but they’re half American too — and their parents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle want to make sure they remember. That’s why they celebrated the Fourth of July on Friday. As you can imagine, this is a day English royalty typically do not honor as it’s a holiday all about America’s freedom from British rule. Talk about awkward! Instead of making it weird, though, the Sussexes shared the sweet and messy activity they did with their kids on Independence Day. And it’s actually a callback to a romantic gesture Prince Harry once made with his wife!

The As Ever founder revealed the cute tradition in a new post on Instagram, which dates back to when she and Prince Harry were dating nine years ago. “Our second date was the 4th of July 2016 and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate,” Markle wrote. Now, all these years later, our two children are in on the tradition.”

She shared a photo of a platter of cupcakes made with Archie and Lilibet, and they are so cute! Half of the cupcakes have a swirl of red, white, and blue frosting, with chocolate cookies on top decorated with peace signs. The other half are topped with white icing and made to look like little faces with two blueberries for eyes and a strawberry mouth. How adorable is that?

Other photos in the carousel are throwbacks to the Sussexes’ second date, including a smiling selfie of Markle and Prince Harry, and a photo of a cupcake with white icing, blue sprinkles, and “4th of July” written in red on top, which Prince Harry gave to Markle.

“Happy Independence Day!” she added. “May your day be as sweet as these cupcakes 🧁”

Although Prince Harry is not a working royal anymore (in a way, he’s had his own liberation from British royalty), he still wants to ensure his kids get a chance to do so if they want in the future. That’s reportedly one reason why he pushed so hard for Archie and Lilibet to have “HRH” or “his/her royal highness” titles added to their passports.

However, insiders don’t believe this will be a possibility once Prince Harry’s estranged older brother Prince William ascends the throne. A source close to William recently told The Daily Beast, “William obviously isn’t going to hire Archie and Lilibet. This is just trolling on the part of Harry and Meghan. … The idea that somehow having a vestigial HRH as a baby later entitles you to be a working royal is beyond parody, even for them.”

It’s impossible to know what the future holds for Archie and Lilibet, but for now, their parents are working hard to help their kids know both sides of their lineage. And it’s beautiful to see!
