During Tuesday’s state banquet in honor of French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte’s visit to the United Kingdom, Kate Middleton wore a sparkling accessory: the Lover’s Knot tiara, a favorite of both the Princess of Wales and the late Princess Diana.

For the occasion, Princess Kate wore a dark red Givenchy by Sarah Burton gown (Burton famously designed her wedding dress when she wed Prince William in 2011). The choice of dress was another example of the princess combining British and French fashion after Kate wore a Dior ensemble with a hat by British designer Jess Collett hat earlier Tuesday. Sarah Burton, who is British, is since September 2024 creative director of the French maison, and a few months ago presented her first designs for Givenchy at Paris Fashion Week.

As for the tiara, Kate played it safe. The princess usually wears four tiaras on special occasions, but the most prominent and ever-present has always been the Lover’s Knot, which Diana lost after her divorce from the then Prince Charles and returned to the royal jewelry box. The tiara has been one of Kate’s favorites for big occasions since she “debuted” it in December 2015; not in vain she wore it for the first time at a state banquet in 2017, on the occasion of the visit of the King and Queen of Spain, Felipe and Letizia.
