Lewis Capaldi Details “Mental Episode” That Led to Him “Convulsing” Backstage
when it happened and when it was happening I was it was like the lowest moment of my life and it was horrible. Lewis Kapaldi is opening up about his mental health. During an appearance on Theo Von’s this past weekend podcast on July 15th, the singer gets candid about his health journey amid his return to Glastonbury Festival. Lewis, who has been open about his health following his Tourette’s diagnosis, opened up about an incident on stage at Glastonbury in 2023 where he had difficulty finishing his performance and fans had to step in to help. He said during the interview when it happened and when it was happening I was it was like the lowest moment of my life and it was horrible. But like I made this uh I had this moment where I was on stage like two three songs in I was like this is the last time I’m going to play a gig for a long time. I was I need to try and get through the rest of the show but when I come off I’m done. So when I got off stage, it was obviously again horrible on at the moment on stage and you know experiencing it all or whatever, but it was me. Um I when I got off stage, everyone else around me was a bit like, oh, this is the worst thing ever. And I had this weird sort of a weight had been lifted of like, oh, now this thing’s happened and I have to get help. A few weeks prior to that show and last we were playing in Chicago. Mhm. And I had a very similar episode. I It was probably even worse uh the one in Chicago. I couldn’t come back on stage and finish the song. I was like backstage convulsing and having like this crazy panic attack, mental like episode. It was really, really bad. Way worse than what happened to Glastonbury. Afterwards, the singer decided to take a break from touring and focus on his mental health for the next 2 years. Yeah. At Glastonbury, when I came off stage, it was weird. cuz I had this, oh, everything’s all right now and I can actually go and get help and fix myself for these for the next two years. And it was um yeah, in a weird way, it’s probably the best thing that ever happened to me that that moment at Glastonbury in 2023 because it was just I wouldn’t have stopped otherwise. He made his return to Glastonbury this year on June 27th, calling it a really special moment for him. Yeah, it was lovely. It was like a really special special moment. Kapal Di first told fans about his Tourette’s syndrome diagnosis during an Instagram live in September 2022. He has continued to speak about living with his diagnosis as well as battling anxiety, even expressing how it’s helped make him feel less alone. He said during an appearance of the Jonathan Ross show about receiving his diagnosis, “It’s nice. It’s nice to hear people are like are able to take something from it cuz I thought I was quite um alone in the fact that I was twitchy but then loads of people came out and were like, “Oh, I’ve got the exact same twitch that you’ve got and I’ve got this and I’ve got that.
Before taking a two-year break from music, Lewis Capaldi said he had a “crazy panic attack” in Chicago that left him “convulsing” backstage: “It was really, really bad.”
