Julie Andrews, the legendary star famous for her iconic Mary Poppins role, has revealed a shocking behind-the-scenes moment from the beloved 1964 film when she completely lost her cool on set.
The celebrated performer, now 87, confessed to having an epic meltdown during filming, unleashing a torrent of profanity that would have made the practically perfect nanny blush.
Her unforgettable portrayal of the magical umbrella-wielding character and her rendition of beloved songs such as “A Spoon Full Of Sugar” have made her a treasured figure for countless generations.
Yet beneath her polished, proper Mary Poppins persona lay a more spirited side that emerged during the film’s challenging stunt work – a facet fans never got to see on screen.
Speaking candidly with US Closer magazine, Dame Julie revealed the physical demands of certain sequences, sharing: “I landed hard and was quite shaken. I have to admit, I let fly a stream of colourful expletives.”
The renowned actress married Tony in 1959, but the couple parted ways in 1968. Subsequently, Dame Julie wed Blake Edwards in 1969, a union that lasted until his passing in 2010.
The couple had two daughters, Amy Edwards and Joanna Edwards. Dame Julie’s challenges weren’t confined to the set of Mary Poppins; she also faced obstacles during the filming of The Sound of Music.
In an open-hearted interview, Dame Julie disclosed her struggles with co-star Christopher Plummer at a time when her marriage to Tony was faltering.
She admitted, “I was quite lonely. Tony was working, and our marriage was a little rocky.”
Despite the trials, Dame Julie insists she wouldn’t alter her past, attributing her tenacity to her mother’s guidance. She recalled, “Thankfully, I was willing to pay my dues and to learn. When we were touring, my mum would drill into me: ‘Don’t you dare complain about anything.. Get on with it and you’ll be respected so much more.”
