Happy birthday to the Duchess of Sussex! According to her Instagram, Meghan Markle rang in the big 44 on August 4 with an under-the-radar celebration planned by her husband, Prince Harry—but it was the outfit she wore (a repeat!) that most caught our eye. You could only catch a tiny glimpse, but the subtle appliqué on the sleeves was obvious and enough to tip us off. Her ensemble was none other than her white Maison Valentino mini dress, last worn in New York City four years ago—and it’s perfect for summer.

First, let’s rewind back to the last time the Duchess of Sussex sported the look. It was 2021. With the advent of vaccines, much of the world was just beginning to return to normalcy following the global pandemic. That’s when Meghan and Harry surprised us with a whirlwind tour of New York City that September, stepping onto the stage at Global Citizen Live to speak about vaccine equity. Seeing them appear holding hands and happy (Harry lovingly referred to Meghan as “my wife” if you can recall) was a moment to remember.
Back to this week: Meghan’s birthday post showed her seated with friends and blowing out the candles during a private dinner at Funke in Beverly Hills. Her caption? “Blowing out the candles on a beautiful 24 hours, and thanking my husband, friends and family for making it so special. To those of you I don’t know, but who send love every day – thank you so much. Please know I feel it and appreciate it.” (She added a heart emoji, too.)
The dress—which she wore with her hair down compared to up in a ponytail like she did in NYC—looked sleek and sophisticated. It also proves the versatility of such a classic and playful piece. (Seriously, how fun is a mini-dress for summer?)
