Sam Heughan’s advice to ‘Outlander’ spinoff cast revealed as they worried over ‘daunting’ sex scenes

Yeah, one of the main things he he said to me right at the start was um you know he didn’t want to give me any any advice on like performance or he’s too respectful for that. But he um said just to enjoy every single moment um as much as you can. You know there’s going to be long days, there’s going to be tough days um but ultimately like take a step back and look at what you’re doing um and how lucky we are to be able to do this sort of thing. Um, and I’ve taken that with me. Um, the from the day that you said it to, you know, even moments like Comic-Con this weekend, seeing, you know, thousands of people in front of you, uh, the premiere a couple nights ago, um, seeing these fans who care so much. Um, and he literally was texting me last night checking in on me. Um, saying, “How you doing? Um, are you you coping okay?” Um, and he’s just saying he’s so proud and and and that really really means a lot more than I can say to have that kind of support only that he the first piece of advice he gave me was a couple of days ago which was when I found out he was coming to the premiere which was so lovely of him to come and support us in that way. But um I was feeling kind of nervous about watching the episode one in front of, you know, with with such a huge audience. And he said to me, “Look, I know it can be hard watching yourself, cuz it often is as an actor, but don’t miss out on this opportunity. It’s the first time and it’s really special and it will be amazing watching it with an audience and you’ll see it totally differently to how you would if you’re watching it on your own.” and he convinced me to sit in and watch it. And I’m so glad that I did because it really was special. And like you said, it’s the first time and that’s the last time it will be the first time. So I’m really glad I was there for that. Honestly, I’ve I’ve had this like so many times people have said like on when we released the bridge comment and be like, “Oh, Jamie Royy’s worked so hard to get all the little mannerisms down.” And you know, I wish wish I could take credit. I mean, I work hard, but that that wasn’t the stuff that I was focusing on. Um, so any little um, crossovers you see are totally coincidental for the most part. I think it just speaks to caston’s ability to find actors like myself and Harriet who, you know, do embody some certain aspects of um, other actors and um, they can they have the vision to know that um, that sort of thing will will play out on the screen. Yeah, I think it’s in terms of mannerisms, no. But in terms of the spirit, um, then yeah, I I we both watched Outlander whilst shooting season one of Blood and My Blood and I think I just absorbed the spirit of Jamie Fraser and and also of Brianna and also of Jenny as well. I think I was just inspired by the energy that each of those characters give on screen. And so I didn’t try and mimic anything or, you know, learn any mannerisms or anything like that. It was more of just a general absorbing of the character and the the core of them. Yeah. Yeah. Let’s be honest. Yeah, it was it was daunting. I’d never done anything of this level before and it it it was daunting, but we have a brilliant team of, you know, support behind us. We we work with an intimacy coordinator who makes sure that we feel safe and confident um before we step on set for any kind of those kinds of scenes. Um, we always have a closed set which means there’s as few people as possible and we rehearse a lot beforehand so that we know exactly what what is going to be asked of us on the day. It’s almost choreographed. It is choreographed. It is just like a dance as Yeah. So there’s nothing thrown at us, you know, in the moment. We know exactly what we’re going to do um physically so that we can then just not be thinking about that and actually just be present and and focus on the performance of the scene. Um, also keeps you pretty healthy, you know. Um cuz I’m like, well, I got to look good. So, uh you know, I don’t don’t drink as much booze as I as I would have. Um I eat healthier and yeah. So, it’s a it’s a win-win, I guess.

The hit series “Outlander” now has a spinoff, “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” premiered Friday, Aug 8 on Starz (8 p.m. ET).

“One of the main things [‘Outlander’ star Sam Heughan] said to me right at the start was just to enjoy every single moment as much as you can,” Jamie Roy, who stars in “Outlander: Blood of my Blood,” told The Post.

“Outlander” premiered in 2014 (based on a bestselling book series), and will end with Season 8 at an unannounced date in 2026. The original show follows Claire (Caitriona Balfe), an English nurse from 1945 who time-travels back to 1743, where she falls in love with the Scottish highlander, Jamie Fraser (Heughan).
