Known as the hardest working member of the royal family, Princess Anne is famously unbothered by fashion. She has said she simply favours practicality, although her outfits possibly tell a different story. It’s not that they’re not necessarily practical, rather that the Princess Royal exhibits an authentic and distinct personal style, one which has led to her unwittingly becoming known as something of a modern style symbol.

In the past couple of years, Instagram accounts have emerged that are dedicated to celebrating Princess Anne’s style. On TikTok, there are millions of videos dissecting her outfits, many of which are made by Gen-Z in praise of her casual country looks, as well as unlikely combinations such as the Adidas trainers she wore with a bucket hat to last year’s Paris Olympics.

Another reason why members of Gen-Z are among her biggest fans? A predominant aspect of Princess Anne’s style is her sustainable approach to dressing. Long before the Princess of Wales was being praised for re-wearing some of her favourite pieces, the Princess Royal was essentially shopping from her own wardrobe, wearing clothes she’s had since the 1970s. Since Queen Elizabeth II died in 2022, Princess Anne has been spotted in certain pieces believed to have belonged to her mother, too.

From Pucci prints to her beloved Barbour jackets, fur-trimmed cloaks to dresses by Ossie Clark and Zandra Rhodes, Princess Anne may not consider herself a fashion influence, but it is clear she has become one. For autumn/winter 2025, Silvia Venturini Fendi cited Princess Anne as the inspiration for Fendi’s menswear collection, telling editors after the show that she considers the royal to be “the most elegant woman in the world… I liked the idea of breaking barriers, breaking the masculine and feminine codes. The Princess Royal is very rigorous in how she dresses, with this kind of military-minded attitude, but feminine at the same time.”

Princess Diana and the current Princess of Wales may be constantly referenced in regard to royal style, but there’s something about the Princess Royal’s understated approach to dressing which manages to resonate with all ages. Perhaps this is precisely because she appears so disinterested in fashion and endless discussions about what she’s wearing (sorry!); Nothing is as chic as insouciance, after all, hence the world’s fascination with French style. As Venturini Fendi said, “she has a life outside the spotlight. She’s kind of an anti-fashion person and, to me, that’s something that’s actually very fashionable and chic.”

Below, some of Princess Anne’s very best outfits throughout the years.

    1969

1969 was the year Princess Anne turned 18 and began her life as a working member of the royal family. For the Bath and West Agricultural Show in May of that year, she wore a flared double-breasted yellow coat dress and a matching hat with black bow detail.
