Audra McDonald details creepy fan encounter that left her fearing for her safety

Hello, Mama Audrey here on our last two docha at the gypsy the gypsy show. Um, and I will probably be doing another um to do video later on. I don’t know. Um, but I did want to get on and just do a quick little sort of PSA, which I wasn’t going to do, but I think it’s important that I do. Um there’s a lot of reasons that uh performers don’t do the stage door. Um there have been shows that I’ve done it and shows that I’ve not done it. But some of the reasons are they’re exhausted. Some people get anxiety about doing the stage door. Um some people are in a rush to catch trains so they can get home. Um uh some people uh avoid the stage door because of um health reasons. Uh, and that’s perfectly fair. Um, actors, as as as much as we would love to be able to sort of greet every single one of you after a show, sometimes it’s it’s we’re just exhausted and it’s hard and, you know, there’s a million reasons and some people love to do it and that’s great. There have been shows where I’ve done it. I have not been doing it in gypsy um for a myriad of reasons. Some of which um the main ones have been because of health um and exhaustion and vocal health and trying to conserve what little energy I have uh vocal energy so that I can get through the next show and the next show and the next show and the next show. So I have not been doing the stage door and um I that’s that’s when I can walk out and wave I’ll you know I’ll wave but most of the time I just try and get out of there. And also I’ve got a a kid that I’m trying to get home to. Um I’ve got a little one that I’m trying to get home to. And um last night um someone not only um I don’t even know if they did the stage door or not, but they snuck around and found um me the way I had exited from the theater last night. and followed me all the way to where I was staying, came into the building and um uh was uncomfortably close and then when I finally got some security to help me um their response was well hey I’ve come all the way and they named some town some city that they’ve come all the way from and they wanted an autograph and sort of felt that they deserved an autograph and that is crossing a big old boundary. Um, and I just want to call that out. That’s a big no no. Um, that’s now messing with my safety. Um, and um, it it’s not right. So, um, when you see an actor, leave the stage door. If they don’t stop, leave them alone. There is a reason that they’re not stopping. And it has nothing to do with you. It’s them protecting their space and peace, whatever that may be. And if they do stop or wave or take a picture with you or sign an autograph, great. Um, but please respect um the proper boundaries. Um, okay, that’s all. All right, that’s Mama Audra’s lesson for today. All right, to do here we go. Going to get through it somehow.

Audra McDonald shared a disturbing story of a zealous fan who crossed “a big old boundary” on Instagram.

On Saturday, the Tony winner, 55, posted a lengthy video explaining that on Friday night, a fan who had just seen McDonald perform on Broadway in “Gypsy,” followed her and made her fear for her safety.
