On this day in 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, met with a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris. She sustained severe injuries and was taken to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital where she was pronounced dead at the age of 36.
Although no longer a member of the royal family, she was given a royal funeral.
Thousands gathered on the streets of London to pay their respects while over two billion people around the world watched the televised service on 6 September, 1997.
