Giorgio Armani, legendary fashion designer, dies at 91

Iconic fashion designer Giorgio Armani, the man who redefined red carpet style and brought understated glamour to Hollywood, has died at the age of 91. The Armani group confirmed the news on September 4th, saying, “Ilsenor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.” They added that Armani remained indeifhaticable to the end, working on his collections and projects until his final days. Born in 1934 in Piaza, Italy, Armani originally studied medicine before serving in the army in his early 20s. His first step into fashion came in 1957, working as a window dresser at a department store in Milan. By the 1960s, he was designing men’s wear for Nino Serudi and freelancing for other houses before launching his own namesake brand in 1975. What started with men’s wear and women’s wear quickly expanded. Armani introduced accessories, fragrances, jeans, and even film costumes, most famously outfitting Richard Gear in American Jigalow in 1980. He also set up shop on Rodeo Drive and began building the connection between fashion and Hollywood. In 1978, Diane Keaton became the first star to wear Armani on the Oscars’ red carpet, stepping on stage in an oversized beige blazer to accept her best actress award for Annie Hall. Over time, Armani won over more A-listers from Julia Roberts to Jodie Foster to Jessica Lang and Michelle Fefeifer, earning Women’s Wear Dy’s nickname, the Armani Awards at the 1990 Oscars. His sleek, minimalist designs stood in contrast to the extravagant gowns of the 1980s, ushering in a new era of red carpet style that blended power with elegance. Armani’s legacy grew with Armani Prey. His couture line launched in 2005, which cemented his place as a red carpet mainstay. Stars like Kate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, and Jodie Foster remain loyal to his timeless classic looks. Giorgio Armani didn’t just create clothes, he created moments. For generations of celebrities and fashion lovers alike, wearing Armani was more than a choice. It was a statement.

“Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and
collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones,” the Armani Group confirmed in a statement Thursday morning.
