Esmée has faced more medical challenges in her short life than most people do in a lifetime

Inspirational six-year-old Stoke-on-Trent girl Esmée McGlinchey is set to meet Prince Harry after winning a national award. The youngster, who is non-verbal and non-mobile so needs round-the-clock care, has been named as a winner in the prestigious national 2025 WellChild Awards

Esmée, who was nominated by her mum, will collect her award in London on September 8. Now in its 20th year, the awards are run by WellChild – the national charity for seriously ill children – and celebrates their inspirational achievements as well as those who care for them.

Esmée was chosen from hundreds of nominations from across the UK to win the Inspiration Child Age 4-6 Award, recognising her incredible bravery in the face of her medical challenges. She was born at just 28 weeks and has faced more medical challenges in her short life than most people do in a lifetime.

She spent her early months in intensive care and has had an incredible 35 surgeries, including major operations on her brain, lungs, and bowel. Now living with multiple complex conditions, Esmée attends a special needs school with one-to-one support. Despite these challenges, Esmée continues to grow, learn, and thrive in her own unique way. She loves Peppa Pig, splashing in water, and dancing to music.

Esmée‘s mum Toni, who nominated her for a WellChild Award, said: “I want Esmée and everyone around her to celebrate this absolute warrior of a little girl. In the very short six years she’s been on this planet she’s been forced to fight for her place in this world and my word has she done just that.

“This award will give Esmée, and us as her family, a sense of pride for the immense strength she has demonstrated over the years and everything she has overcome.”

Esmée will receive their award at a special star-studded ceremony in London, where she will meet WellChild Patron Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, at a private reception ahead of the event. WellChild Patron, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex said: “I am always privileged to attend the WellChild Awards and meet the incredible children, families and professionals who inspire us all with their strength and spirit.

“For 20 years these awards have highlighted the courage of young people living with complex health needs and shone a light on the devoted caregivers – family and professionals – who support them every step of the way. Their stories remind us of the power of compassion, connection and community.”

WellChild chief executive Matt James added: “Children like Esmée embody what the WellChild Awards are all about – strength, compassion and the will to thrive in the face of adversity. We’re proud to have been celebrating their incredible stories for the past 20 years.”
