Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, & Martin Short discuss the new season of ‘Only Murders in the Building’
Almost all my dramatic roles have been blended with comedy. So there’s like Father of the Bride, which is a Yes. What? I thought you were gonna say all my dramatic roles have been laughed at. That would have been better. Oh. So, usually a dramatic role will blend in with a comedic role and and suddenly you’ll be in a comedy and and find yourself in a very emotional scene. And that’s just part of what we do. I also think that even if you’re doing a comedy scene, you have to make it real on some level. You have to if a character has a quirk, you have to make you have to ground it. So that’s I think as a comedic actor, it’s you’re still an actor and that’s equally rewarding. Would you say that again so I can play it back for you the next time we do a scene. You have just the part where you say you have to make it real. Okay. Hello. Hello. Straight ahead. Straight ahead. Straight ahead everybody. A thousand%. I think everything that we all you know three of us we try to be on time, make sure the environment feels light and and fun for everyone no matter what the situation is. I I appreciate the work ethic that we all have and you know starts with John Hoffman and Steve and everyone else and I felt I mean you can see it on camera like you know the here we go the the Godfather scene with with the horse head in the bed with the guy. Yeah. You can just see the rapport that they’re actually enjoying it. [Music] because you’ve done so many seasons now. Is it just like who do we kill next? Yes, definitely. Well, we had to kill the door man. We’re looking around and the actors are going, “Not me. I’m not here. I’m just going off to lunch.” So, Jackie Hoffman said, “I wish they’d kill me. Maybe I’d have more lines as a ghost.” That’s true, though. You do get to know these characters once they’re dead through flashbacks. Well, we have a good solution for next uh next well the end of the season. I don’t know if you’ve seen the end of the season. We have a good good beginning to the uh okay next season possible season six. Yeah. I was like okay. [Music] We have writers. We have very good writers, including John Hoffman, the headwriter, who are sort of the outside observers of the show. If you ask us, we don’t really know if a subtle thing happened that, you know, that matters in the next season, but we have outside people watching this thing and writing a new season. They’ve done a great job for us so far. I don’t know their names. We’re extremely lucky. Yeah.
