Father and son King Charles and Prince Harry met face-to-face for the first time in 19 months on September 10 at the King’s London home, Clarence House.

The meeting was “very emotional” and included “hugs and tears,” a source told Us Weekly.

“They really missed each other,” the insider added.

King Charles and Prince Harry’s first meeting in 19 months—which took place at Clarence House on September 10, a private tea between father and son that lasted just under an hour—was “very emotional” and consisted of “hugs and tears,” a source speaking to Us Weekly said.

“The meeting was sparked by a handwritten letter from Harry earlier this year to Charles expressing his desire to reconnect,” the insider said. “They were not sure it was going to happen until just in the last week.”

The reunion between the two was “super positive and very relaxed,” they added: “They were catching up personally about the children [Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who Harry shares with wife Meghan Markle] and what has been going on with Charles and his health,” the source said, referring to the King’s cancer, which he announced in February 2024—which also marks the last time Charles and Harry saw one another prior to last week.

“There were hugs and tears at the meeting,” the insider continued, adding that Charles and Harry “shared a long hug when they first saw each other. Harry started crying and it was very emotional for both of them. They really missed each other.”

The face-to-face meeting took place because Charles “felt the timing was right” and that their “rift needed to be addressed,” with the source saying, “They needed to come to some sort of resolution and they both feel the same.” The insider said that the “mood was genuine and positive”—even adding that there was “laughter,” despite the emotionally-charged nature of the meeting.

“It was a short window of time, but Charles agreed to it because the timing worked out for him and it was a good opportunity to meet while Harry was in London,” they added. “They met at Clarence House because it’s the King’s home. And it was chosen because it was an intimate, less formal atmosphere compared to Buckingham Palace. They wanted an intimate setting to ease back into their personal connection without any pressure.”

Harry told The Guardian of his visit to the U.K. that he “enjoyed the week. I have always loved the U.K., and I always will love the U.K.”

While Harry enjoyed his time away, he no doubt missed Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet back at home in the U.S. Meghan certainly missed him, as she made clear on her As Ever lifestyle brand’s Instagram page, posting a photo of two glasses of wine and writing alongside it, “When your beau is back in town…” indicating that Harry was back in California just ahead of his 41st birthday on September 15.
