Colin Farrell & Margot Robbie on doing Irish accents, line dancing & moving the entire crew to tears

[Music] You’re very welcome back. Now, earlier this week, Ireland Am caught up with Colin Farrell and Marggo Robbie. They opened up about the emotional highs of filming their latest movie, including a dance scene so moving, even the crew were in tears. Yes. And spoiler alert, much to Marco’s surprise, we even got a sing along for Italian 90. Anyway, here’s our press chat interview with Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie on their brand new film, A Big Bold, Beautiful Journey. Is that your high school? Yeah. How’d you know? Well, two reasons. One, those could only be high school doors. Uh, the second reason, I’ll tell you later. I know. Wait, wait. What? Um, no. I’m not sure what. Well, I I I went here for 4 years, but I don’t know who or what, when, you know. It’s okay. High school. It’s okay. Uh, we’ll find out. Come on. Oh, wow. David, what are you doing? Mr. House, you’re late. Come on. No, you’re dead. What? You’re dead. I was at your funeral. It’s 4 years from now. I mean, look, maybe I was wrong, but get your pancreas checked, will you? I don’t know what kind of pre-show routine you’re doing here, but there’s no time. Curtains in half an hour. Half hour. Mr. Nelson, how old am I? You’re 15. I’m 15. Let’s start off with something nice and easy. Since Yeah. Okay. Go real hard. Real straight into leading to what? Leading to Okay. um specific memory from this film, from the making of it that you’ll hope you’ll be able to hold on to years after. I don’t know. There was a there was a Yeah, honestly, it was a kind of a sickening joy this whole thing. It was really beautiful and like I’ve had 25 years of working as an actor and and I’ve had the opportunity to work with extraordinary crews and inevitably the crew of course become a part of they’re helping build a film as you are but I don’t know that I can ever recall a crew being as seemingly it felt like emotionally invested in this story line. I think basically it’s about everyone. It really is. The film is about we’ve all experienced loss. We’ve all experienced mistakes that we’ve been a part of in our past and all that kind of thing. And we’re all questionable in how much hope we have for our future, especially in the world as it is now and stuff. But all that hope and all that kind of forgiveness and and stuff was on display in this film. And the crew really leaned into it. But I say that because there was one dance that we did in this film that didn’t make the final cut. Oh, right. And Kanata had the idea, our writer, director had the idea to choreograph a dance that articulated the whole film in the space of three minutes. Nice. And we did it. And she did it. And it was we shot we did it and the whole crew stood around. The whole crew stood it was in an empty sound stage steady cam huge empty sound stage in Hollywood that just had one spotlight and one camera operator and we did this dance. It took three minutes and Kogan brought the whole crew in. It was on the last day and all the crew were around us and we did this dance and it was quite moving at that stage cuz the film is just a beautiful experience. That was a very special day. One of the most special days I’ve had. Yeah. Yeah. That for you as well? Yeah. that that yeah that was absolutely incredible and there was another dance actually that also didn’t make the movie that was also incredibly and we kept um it was so the song to it everything was so emotional that we kept like crying in it even though our characters weren’t meant to cry and Kay would be like we’d come in and do the take he’s like I just don’t think they should cry and both of us were like we’re really trying not to but like this music is so moving so moving and the moment is so moving and we kept like some of the lads the electricians were in the corner Yeah. Yeah. It was it was the song was so the song isn’t it was written for the film and it’s not in the it’s not in the final cut and honestly it’s one of the most quietly powerful things I’ve ever heard. Unbelievable director’s cut maybe. Hopefully I’ll get possibly some some it be great if it was on the soundtrack. It’s in the Colin Margo cut. Yeah. Hopefully. Um I know there was a scene in this Marggo where you did an Irish accent and I’m wondering how did she do man? And I was going to say like I mean first of all did Colin give you any tips and secondly is it as difficult as people say it is? Yes. I think it’s the best accent in the world and also I’ve never done it before. So I would say it’s that and South Africa and the two accents I’ve never studied and I think are probably the most difficult and um Colin did help. I asked him to record it on his phone that line so I could just listen to it and try and copy it. Repeat it again and again. Yeah. I just knew the kind of slaughter she’d be a victim of in our country if she didn’t get it right. So are you but also to give myself legal the character is not an actress not exactly it was intentional it’s got to be in the the vicinity of an I mean yeah the whole film is about she’s supposed to be taking the piss out of me in the moment anyway exactly and the film is the film is about grace give yourself a little bit of grace I know you mentioned now you you had a load of dance uh kind of moments in this and your brother was an instructor in the Billy Berries wasn’t he not the Billy Barry’s the performing arts school performing art school performing arts school now yeah Marggo I presume you are familiar amilar with his history. Do you know what? I’ve only seen a little bit of this and I’m really happy to get a full length. Oh my god. And the the picture you saw earlier didn’t have the thumb in it which just look serious. No. Swipe across. Swipe across. There’s more there. You are so Look at that. Did you call in all seriousness, did you actually have any of the line dance and kind of any of that kind of the movement? Ah, yeah. What did for this film? Yeah. It always lives inside me, man. It’s in the bones. It’s in the bones. It’s deep in the marrow, brother. Steve and the Marlo, you can take the man out of line dancing. Do you know what is that? Break for the amazing break for the border. Break for that was break for the border. That’s right. Yeah. Were you there yourself on a Tuesday night at half seven? You were still in the cradle. You were still in the cradle. I was still Listen, I was a glint in the milkman’s eye. Final one. If you had a door in front of you and you could open that door into a memory, what memory would that be? Do you think you want to go when Ireland entered the World Cup in Italy in 1990? Italia 90. Come on. We’re all part of Jackie’s army. We’re all up to Italy and we really shake them up when we win the World Cup cuz Ireland are the greatest football team. Cute nasty guitar riff. Yeah, it was brilliant. It was brilliant. Yeah. Well, I’ve heard him say this so many times. I want to be there. What was your one? Well, I just want to be there. It sounded It was a pivotal moment in Irish history. We all remember it. We will never forget it. I’ll never forget it now. There you go. [Music] You know how to fix total cars? I do not. How about burning cars? No. That’s very dramatic. It’s a bit over the top. Coming up on Saturday’s Ireland, we’ll be joined by the West Bank volunteers who’s teaching kids in a refugee camp to sing in Irish. Comedian Aden McQueen will be in with her two cents on the perils of mo modern dating and texting in the digital age. And one half of the Hold My Drink podcast, Ellie Kelly will be dropping by. All that plus a new sport and weather you’re waking up to. Join us for Saturday’s Ireland AM from 9. We’re talking about how how a bunch of nuns skipped the queue on Brooke when she was in an airport. And uh a lot of people saying you should have stopped them. Anna got your back. Anna said, “Broo, that is not acceptable. Speak up. Nuns feel entitled. I would have challenged them. Get to the back of the queue.” I’d like to see me chucking a pile of nuns to the back of the queue. Are you joking? No. In a future, if you had started a rosary, they all would have got down on their knees. Also, it’s not mother. It’s sister after you. Sister. Yeah. There you go. You see? Anyway, we’ll be back tomorrow. See you then. Take care. Bye-bye. Enjoy your Friday. Bye-bye.
