Why James Van Der Beek Dropped Out of Dawson’s Creek Reunion | E! News
James Vanderbeek is calling in his hero. The cast of Dawson’s Creek is gathering for a reunion at the Richard Rogers Theater on Broadway September 22nd for a live reading of the show Pilot. And while proceeds from the event will benefit Fancer and James, who was diagnosed with stage three colarctal cancer in November, the actor pulled out of the reunion. explaining in a lengthy Instagram post September 21st, the actor says, “The reason is severe stomach illness.” He writes next to a poster of the event, quote, “This is the evening I’ve been looking forward to most since my angel, Michelle Williams, said she was putting it together way back in January. So, you can imagine how gutted I was when two stomach viruses conspired to knock me out of commission and keep me grounded at the worst possible moment. Despite every effort, I won’t get to be there.” But the show will go on with Hamilton star Lyn Manuel Miranda stepping in to read the part of Dawson. James continues, quote, “I do have an understudy, a ridiculously overqualified replacement who would have been number one on my wish list had I ever dreamed he’d be available. Someone my kids would definitely consider an upgrade over me. Plus, he already knows how to get to the theater, so that’s convenient.” The role of Dawson, usually played by James Vanderbeek, will be played by Lin Manuel Miranda. Can’t believe I just got to type that. First announced back in August, the class reunion event will reunite the show stars Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, Josh Jackson, Bizzy Phillips, and more. It would have marked the first time the full Dawson’s Creek cast has appeared together since the show ended in 2003. [Music]
