Prince William and Kate Middleton are on the move later this year, and they reportedly cannot wait to leave Adelaide Cottage behind.

Kensington Palace confirmed in August that the Prince and Princess of Wales were relocating to Forest Lodge. While many royal fans speculated it was to give their three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, more space, a Hello! source is revealing the emotional reason why they are moving.

“Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start; an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind,” a palace insider explained to the media outlet. “They are looking forward to creating many happy family memories in their new home.”

The royal couple originally left London to be closer to Queen Elizabeth on the grounds of Windsor Castle, but shortly after their arrival, the monarch passed away. Adelaide Cottage was also the home they lived in when Kate and King Charles were diagnosed with cancer. So, it was time to create happier memories in a new residence.

Kate and William are currently having the $20 million Forest Lodge renovated ahead of their arrival later this fall. Per The Sun, the Wales family will be paying all of the renovation and moving costs so they aren’t a burden to U.K. taxpayers. They learned their lesson when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle went through their own renovation controversy with Frogmore Cottage. (The couple paid the taxpayers back in 2020.)

The idea of a “fresh start” has been floated out there for a while for Kate and William. They were allegedly promised Royal Lodge by Charles, but Prince Andrew wouldn’t leave his beloved home. So, they went to find a suitable estate for their growing family.

“Windsor has become their home,” a source told The Sun. “However, over the last few years, while they have lived at Adelaide Cottage, there have been some really difficult times. Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter; an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind. This is a move for the long-term. They see it as their forever home.”

Hopefully, Forest Lodge will give Kate and William a new perspective after three really difficult years.
