Gavin Newsom Reacts To Donald Trump Threatening 100% Tariff On Foreign-Made Movies
President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he will be imposing an 100% tariff on foreignade movies. Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America by other countries just like stealing candy from a baby. California with its weak and incompetent governor has been particularly hit hard. Trump claimed on September 29th, adding, “Therefore, in order to solve this longtime, neverending problem, I will be imposing an 100% tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter.” The 79-year-old did not specify how the tariff would be imposed or when it could take effect. It’s also unclear on whom the burden of the tariff would fall, and as Reuters reported, what legal authority the president has to enact it. His latest post on the topic comes more than four months after he initially threatened a tariff on foreign made films in May. Following Trump’s announcement, California Governor Gavin Newsome responded. The governor replied to a post about Trump’s thry on X with two headlines alongside the text, “Almost like we know what we’re doing, almost like Donald Trump absolutely does not.” The headlines attached read, “TV producers flocked to California’s expanded tax credit.” while the other read, “Hollywood Studios’ stocks fall after Trump foreign film tariff vow.” In July, Newsome expanded California’s film and television tax credit program, according to a press release by his office, which added, “The move more than doubles the program’s annual funding from 330 million to 750 million and introduces key updates to key production, below the line jobs, and investments rooted in California.” The release also claimed the governor is awarding 16 new television shows through the program, which taken together are collectively anticipated to bring $1.1 billion in total spending and nearly 6,700 cast and crew jobs across the Golden State. Hollywood studios typically shoot or edit parts of a film overseas, according to Axios, which notes that countries offer tax breaks among other incentives to encourage production there. [Music]
