Richard Dalton, the hairdresser for the late Princess Diana, recently revealed that the royal had tabloid magazines secretly brought to her because she “wasn’t allowed” to read them.

“One of the hairdressers smuggled them in,” Dalton told People in an interview published on Monday, September 29. “Did I say that? They were smuggled in, but it’s not to do with me. She used to say, ‘Richard, can you bring them in for me?’”

“Nobody questioned it because nobody knew,” he continued. “Once I’d got through security and into the pantry, it was all plain sailing from there.”

However, the mom of two had a love/hate relationship with the publications — and Dalton admitted that certain coverage often “annoyed” her.

“I’d be doing her hair, she’d be flipping through the pages [of a tabloid], and she’d go, ‘Ugh,’” Dalton recalled. “Then another one comes along and then [she’d go], ‘Ohhhhhh.’”

Dalton recalled that a persistent rumor of whether or not King Charles III was the father of Prince Harry was one story in particular that bothered her.

In 1995, during BBC’s Panorama, Diana confirmed that she had an affair with British Army officer James Hewitt for several years after Harry, 42, was born. Hewitt’s red hair often led to tabloids running headlines suggesting he was her youngest son’s father – something Dalton said is absolutely not true.

“Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, when I used to cut his hair, his hair was bright red,” Dalton explained. “Lady Sarah, also red. The Spencers definitely had red hair. But at that time, I wasn’t in a position to actually say, ‘Hello, Charles Spencer’s hair was red.’”
