Prince Harry and King Charles’s first face-to-face meeting in 18 months was supposed to be a step towards reconciliation – but it’s only led to more drama and suspicion

Prince Harry and King Charles enjoyed a private tea last month, marking their first encounter in over 18 months. And it was broadly seen as an initial but significant move towards repairing their strained relationship.
But it wasn’t long before Prince Harry and King Charles’s face-to-face reunion became embroiled in fresh controversy amid allegations of Royal briefings and undermining tactics.
Following reports that details of the meeting were supposedly leaked by someone with insider access, Harry’s representatives released a statement implying it was the handiwork of “sources intent on sabotaging” the reunion.
The briefing featured the assertion that Harry found the long-awaited reunion “distinctly formal”, and that he’d given his dad a framed photograph of himself, Meghan and Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, who the King hasn’t seen in person since summer 2022.
Team Sussex, nevertheless, declared the assertion about the formal atmosphere was “categorically false”, and proceeded to suggest that devious methods were being used to derail the route to Royal reconciliation.

“The quotes attributed to him are pure invention fed, one can only assume, by sources intent on sabotaging any reconciliation between father and son,” the statement said.
“Presumably, those same sources have also chosen to disclose that gifts were exchanged. While we would have preferred such details to remain private, for the sake of clarity we can confirm that a framed photograph was handed over, however, the image did not contain the duke and duchess.”
An article in a newspaper, which was subsequently circulated globally, quoted “a source close to the duke” stating that the relationship between Harry and his father was “a matter for the two of them”, and “the men in grey suits should stay out of it,” reports OK!
Royal commentator Duncan Larcombe suggests that the aftermath of the visit has left Harry feeling increasingly isolated and distrustful.
“The strength of the statement from his team was a sign of just how frustrated Harry’s feeling and how he doesn’t know who he can trust,” he shared with OK!

“Harry has always struggled with the men in grey suits, and again that’s something borrowed from his mother.
“He is clearly wanting to try to increase his popularity back in the UK and build some bridges but is finding it much more difficult than he anticipated.
“He might be worrying that it’s a hopeless cause, and the efforts to reconcile with his dad are ruined. It’s difficult for Harry. How do you reconcile with your father when you worry there are other people involved that you can’t trust?”
Unlike the encounter between their senior advisers earlier this summer – which partially occurred on a balcony in full sight of a waiting photographer – the King, 76, and Harry, 41, held talks for just under an hour behind the heavily protected doors of Clarence House.
It marked the first occasion the duo had come face-to-face since Harry travelled over from America to visit the King shortly after he revealed he was receiving treatment for cancer in early 2024.
Whilst the forcefully worded declaration from the Sussex team distanced Harry and his representatives from the source of the supposed leak, the Sussexes have previously revealed numerous details of private discussions and meetings with their Royal family members.

The revelations in Spare, their Oprah Winfrey sit-down and in their debut Netflix programme allegedly made the palace wary about the most recent father-and-son encounter, as well.
Ahead of Harry’s trip to the King’s residence on 10 September, Royal biographer Tom Bower forecast it would be a “meeting full of peril”, because Harry was “no longer trusted” and had “only enemies in the palace”.
Nevertheless, the Sussexes have also been extremely outspoken about their own lack of trust.
Following his unsuccessful High Court challenge against the ruling to remove him and his family of taxpayer-funded protection whilst in the UK, Harry didn’t mince words about who he held responsible.
Besides stating he felt “let down” by the proceedings, he branded the legal setback as a “good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up”.
In their 2022 Netflix documentary, Prince Harry accused the palace of “institutional gaslighting”, alleging they were “happy to lie” to safeguard his brother, Prince William, but were “never willing to tell the truth to protect” him and Meghan.
A trailer for the same series also featured a claim from former Suits actress Meghan that “I wasn’t being thrown to the wolves, I was being fed to the wolves.”

Duncan suggests that while Meghan wouldn’t intentionally stoke Harry’s negative sentiments, her own experiences might contribute to his wary outlook.
“Meghan has been very outspoken about her feelings on some palace staff and procedures, so there could well be an element of, ‘I told you so,’ from her, in terms of her believing there are people that can’t be trusted.
“But she’ll be supporting Harry completely because he’s her husband, and she will know better than anyone how much a reconciliation would mean to him. But she will also want to protect him.”
