EXCLUSIVE: Going into Project Healthy Mind’s festival, I had a feeling Harry’s talk would have an impact on me, I just wasn’t sure how.Prince Harry giving a mental health talk I had the privlege of attending Prince Harry’s talk on mental health(Image: Brigid Brown)

Prince Harry participated in World Mental Health Day on Friday, kicking off a four-person panel, and I was genuinely impressed.

One crucial element I observed was that when Harry stepped onto the stage, he addressed the audience directly, not lecturing them, emphasizing that mental health involves community participation, positioning himself as part of it rather than distant or superior.

Harry’s opening was brief and to the point, spanning considerable ground, transitioning from one weighty subject to another in a fluid way without faltering, which proved both touching and powerful, displaying his innate compassion.

Harry began by humbly expressing gratitude to everyone for attending and remained completely open, conveying a ‘we’re all in this together’ approach, with the discussion centered on surviving or flourishing in our digital era.

He delivered a meaningful statement, establishing the day’s atmosphere, declaring: “These are not separate problems for separate people, they are interlocking injuries to our global community.”

He gently prepared attendees for the day ahead by outlining what lay in store: “Over the next several hours you will hear from remarkable people, researchers, advocates, parents, young people and leaders reshaping how we approach our mental health, here in American and around the world.”

From there, he circled back to discuss what’s been unfolding globally, returning to the pandemic’s onset and its lasting impact: “The past five years have taught us, painfully, that crises rarely arrive in isolation, the global pandemic stripped away the ordinary scaffolding of life and brought an immeasurable surge of anxiety, depression and loss of connection.”

Harry expanded beyond personal experiences to examine how mental health can affect whole nations.

He said: “War and displacement, from Ukraine to Gaza, Sudan to DRC/DLC, and many places in between, have created waves of trauma, for those defending their countries and way of life, as civilians, families, are forced to flee.”

    Harry’s talk was very inclusive

He took it a step further, discussing how Mother Nature can wreak havoc on an individual’s or entire community’s psychological well-being. “Climate disasters have translated into eco-anxiety and psychological upheaval as extreme weather uproots communities and destabilizes lives.”

We exist in a digital era, and while some people remember life before the internet, for younger generations, this is their only reality, and it can pose dangers to both groups.

Harry tackled technology’s dark side: “Our digital world has fundamentally changed how we experience reality, young people exposed to relentless and parasitic harassment, misinformation and an attention economy designed to keep us scrolling at the expense of sleep and real human contact.”

He spoke in a very caring manner

While the digital age brings its own set of challenges, Harry highlighted that there are issues that extend beyond the internet in his recent talk.

Harry stated: “And, of course, economic instability, from cost of living shocks to inflation has produced constant, corrosive stress for hundreds of millions.”

Going above and beyond, Harry emphasized that people aren’t alone in facing these problems; they are shared difficulties with potential shared solutions.

He declared: “These are not separate problems for separate people, they are interlocking injuries to our global community.”

In conclusion, he said: “Mental health is shaped by public health, climate policy, corporate design and economic choices, too often decisions made by a few powerful actors ripple across the planet into every aspect of our lives.”

Recently, Harry and Meghan were honored with the Humanitarians of the Year Award by Project Healthy Minds. Their nonprofit, Archewell, helped produce three talks at Project Healthy Minds’ World Mental Health Day Festival on Friday, focusing on the importance of mental health maintenance.
