Meghan Markle’s PR must be working overtime to try and curb the successive controversies and backlashes that have trailed the Duchess since she decided to surprise fans by making her Paris Fashion Week debut.
The latest one came about after she compared her Netflix deal downgrade to the Obamas’ during her Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit speech.
Fans Savage Meghan Markle For Name-dropping the Obamas
Daily Mail shared a poll with the question, “Is Meghan right to compare herself to the Obamas?” The poll came with only two options: yes and no. 96% voted no out of over 15,000 voters.
But what exactly did Meghan say? “My husband and I were in an overall deal with Netflix, and then not just similar to Higher Ground in the Obamas’ deal, once that had come to its term, the extension of it, which was such an incredible sign of the strength of our partnership, was now being in a first-look deal,” the Duchess said in the Oct. 14 Washington DC summit.
Needless to say, fans found this in poor taste, with one commenting, “She couldn’t resist name-dropping the Obamas when talking about her much-downgraded ‘first-look’ Netflix deal. Clearly, she knows the deal’s a dud, so she tossed in the Obama name clout to prop it up.”
Another called the comparison “nauseating.”
Meghan Markle Opens Up About Her Downgraded Netflix Deal
Even though Netflix clearly downgraded her and Harry’s deal, Meghan didn’t see it as such a bad thing as people may think.
In fact, according to her, the first-look deal is “exciting, because it gives us flexibility to go to our partners first, and then at the same time, to be able to shop content that might not be the right fit for Netflix, but has a home somewhere else.”
In addition, she seemingly teased that more content is under development, saying, “So for our non scripted team and our scripted team, we’ve been doing a lot of content development that can meet different rooms.”
One of the confirmed contents coming our way from the Duchess is a Christmas special that promises lots of holiday cheer for viewers. During her Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit appearance, she seemingly tied the Christmas special with her cooking show ‘With Love, Meghan.’
