Jennifer Lawrence’s Peaceful Break: A Return to Hollywood
Jennifer Lawrence recently shared on the Graham Norton Show that she felt at peace with the idea of not returning to Hollywood during her two-year acting hiatus a few years ago. After earning her fourth Oscar nomination for the 2015 film Joy, Lawrence experienced a series of box office disappointments, including Passengers in 2016, Mother in 2017, Red Sparrow in 2018, and the X-Men spin-off Dark Phoenix in 2019. Following these, she took a break from acting for two years, making her return in late 2021 with Adam McKay’s ensemble comedy, Don’t Look Up, Lawrence explained to Norton, “I took a little time for myself. I spent my 20s working non-stop, and then I thought, what’s out there? What’s happening?” When asked if she was concerned about not being able to reenter Hollywood, the Oscar-winning actress replied, “I was at peace with the possibility of that happening. Hollywood is a lot to handle. I think I would have been okay, but also I would have been really upset. I don’t know.” In a 2021 interview with Vanity Fair before the release of Don’t Look Up, Lawrence mentioned that her break from Hollywood was necessary because she felt she was not delivering the quality that I should have. She added, “I think everyone had grown tired of me. I’d grown tired of myself.” It reached a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, people would ask, “Why didn’t you run?” Lawrence continued by saying, “I realized that I had been trying to please people for most of my life.” Working made me feel like no one could be upset with me. Okay, I agreed to this. We’re doing it. No one’s mad. But then I reached a point where people weren’t pleased just by my existence. That realization made me understand that work or a career can’t bring peace to your soul. Her longtime best friend and producing partner, Justine Pski, explained Lawrence’s need for a break by telling Vanity Fair, “The demands of stardom started to stifle her creativity and disrupt her inner compass. So, she disappeared for a while, which was probably the most responsible way to protect her talents and sanity. Lawrence is now back in the spotlight as she promotes Die My Love, an upcoming psycho drama featuring co-star Robert Patinson and directed by Lin Ramsay. [Music]
