‘House of Dynamite’ director Kathryn Bigelow discuss the explosive reality of nuclear stockpiles

    I think the um pursuit of authenticity, you know, I want it to be honest and true. And so you’re you’re creating a kind of truth and a draft of history, so to speak, like in her in uh Zero Dark 30. Nobody, you know, I spoke with the fam the 9/11 families and many of them had no idea what happened in in those 10 years between the event and the and the pursuit of the final pursuit of Osama bin Laden and Hurt Locker. Again, the methodology of the insurgency in Iraq, that was a very opaque part of our history. And in this case, I personally I wanted to know what what hap what you know where we are again with the nuclear stockpile and how volatile it is and who’s taking care of it who’s who’s which you know it turns out that it’s these incredibly competent people operating in a in infantessimally short timeline and it’s only the stake the um fate of the world is at stake. It’s how it’s put together. I mean I had an extraordinary technical team which I mentioned Barry talk mentioned Barry Akroyd a minute ago but we have um Jeremy Hindel who built the sets and you know provided environments that these people that also give it a kind of degree of reality that yes the script is extraordinary but at the same time you need you need the environments in which these actors and characters perform and like for instance Stratcom. He went to Stratcom and it was an absolute replica. People are not allowed in a place like Stratcom which is the nuclear umbrella of the country. So that was an extraordinary um gift to the film. And then the editing Kurt Baxter balancing all of these like it’s like a juggling act. I mean, all of these simultaneities and and the details and yes, the humanity of it. It’s almost like like three-dimensional chess. We kept talking about that when we were shooting it. Like how do you Okay, he’s there, but then that he’s doing that and then he’s jumping out off the roof of the Pentagon while while he’s in the in Marine One. I mean it just balancing all of that and the kind of careful precision that was necessary for the humanity to come through. That’s an extraordinary editor. And then and then of course supporting it with with a score that is for me just off the chart. Vulkar just created a I mean I don’t know I’ve never heard anything like it. So I am a very fortunate director to have amassed such a great crew.
