[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] It’s funny because women have such a an evolved ability to fit themselves into expectation. But I think in supporting women in film, we’re starting to sort of redefine desire and make films from that place of of the places that we really want to come from versus the places we want to satisfy. Um, versus uh expectation that that comes from the outside of the body. I think women in film, we’ve always been here, but I think it’s like a total fallacy to think that we’re not still trying to trudge our way in and actually be acknowledged as like actually existing. Just to be in the room and remember that spirit of when I was myself a a new storyteller and how much it meant to me to be in the room with people that were further along in their in in their careers and their journeys and to be able to ask questions and lean on them. really it is in those moments that I felt like I had the fortitude to continue to try. Women make up more than half the population. So anytime you’re interested in telling the stories of um majority of the people who are walking on the planet uh and amplifying their experiences as human beings is always going to be uh a worthy um way to spend your time. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] For me, mentorship was someone seeing me before I could see myself. I wouldn’t be standing here today with two Oscars. without people who guided me. From my college professor Linda Bolton Smith who refused to let me quit to director Spike Lee who offered me my first film to the late director John Singleton who be became a part of my film family who gave me room to learn experiment and to grow. That’s what mentorship and fellowship do. They say to every woman, filmmaker and artist, we see you. I can now attest to the bare knuckle brawling that it takes every step of the way. When the content is too dark, too taboo, when the frankness with which it serves up observations about experience is routinely experienced by women frequently provoke disgust and rejection. But they are true. And I don’t feel disgusting. I wonder if in a room like this full of women who venture and dare to make things with their own two hands and their bodies and their voices, which takes lifelong work and effort to even discover, let alone trust in amidst this infiltrating, misogynist cacophony of what is expected of you. Every woman has a right to use their true voice, not the one that’s been curated for them by someone else. The first responsibility of a liberated woman is to lead the fullest, freest, and most imaginative life that she can. But the second responsibility is her solidarity with other women. Just by being here, we are thriving. And I want to make sure that we self-possess that celebration.
