How Sydney Sweeney transformed for new movie ‘Christy’; gained 35 pounds and built a home boxing gym

Sydney Sweeney is no stranger to transformation, but her latest role might just be her most powerful yet. In Christy, the 28-year-old Euphoria star steps into the ring, literally, to play legendary boxer Christy Martin. And how she prepared for it is the stuff of Hollywood grit and heart. Sweenie didn’t just act like a fighter, she became one. She gained 35 lbs for the role, bulking up through a grueling regimen of weight training, boxing, and what she calls protein shake after protein shake. She told Good Morning America she built her own rocky gym in her grandmother’s shed back home in Idaho. Every day started with weights followed by two to three hours of boxing. The result, a transformation that went far beyond muscle. Your question, I was so nervous to meet Christie. I I wasn’t sure if she was going to like me. Uh it’s also just like that weird thing. Am I playing you? It was just I was really nervous, but within 5 seconds of us hanging out, I was like, I want you around 24/7. And it was such a gift to have her in my corner. And when we would be filming the boxing scenes, I would be fighting in the ring and I’d hear Christy down at the bottom being like, “Get her with the left hook.” And then Sydney was like, “Yeah, but Christy, you know the left hook’s coming.” Oh, yeah. Right. Yeah. So, it was just it was so much fun all the time. and uh we have a great bond now. That bond became a cornerstone of Sweeny’s performance. Martin, the first woman ever to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated, was by her side throughout the filming, often shouting advice from ringside. At the New York screening, the pair’s chemistry was undeniable, capped off when both were surprised with honorary WBC championship belts. Christy called Sydney’s performance a knockout, saying she lost Sydney Sweeney in this movie and found Christy. Christy tells the story of Martin’s rise from smalltown coal country to becoming boxing’s biggest female star and her harrowing fight for survival after years of abuse from her husband and trainer. Sweeney says the story’s themes of resilience and domestic violence hit home and hopes the film raises awareness for survivors everywhere. Offscreen, Sweeney continues to be one of Hollywood’s most talked about stars. From her viral Variety Power Women performance to that surprise World Series intro that had fans split down the middle. But Chrissy Martin says the noise won’t distract her friend. I continued to remind her to be true to her. Be careful. Have a small circle and be careful of who you let in that circle. And with Oscar buzz already building for her performance, Sydney Sweeney isn’t just fighting in the ring. She’s fighting for her place among Hollywood’s greats. From her grandmother’s shed in Idaho to the red carpet in New York, Sydney Sweeny’s journey as Christy Martin is more than just a role. It’s a reminder of the strength it takes to keep fighting both on and off the canvas.

Sydney Sweeney steps into the ring, and out of her comfort zone, to portray boxing legend Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic “Christy.” From gaining 35 pounds and training in her grandma’s shed to forming a real-life bond with Christy herself, Sydney’s transformation is nothing short of inspiring.
