How Oliver Hudson became the King of Christmas
You are getting everybody in the spirit because you’re like you’re now like the king of Christmas. I think I think I’m taking that title. Yeah, it is. Gingerbread Land, the biggest little holiday competition and also a merry little Christmas. You’re hitting us from every angle. Not to mention the celebrity British bake baking show as well, which is a Christmas theme. So, wow. It’s the trifecta of Christmas. Okay, watch out Mariah. Right now, exactly. Cuz you are um like you were saying the king of Christmas. Do you all make time for each other during the holidays or is the holiday kind of like a blur? No, no, no, no. The holidays are very very special for for the fam for sure. We go to Colorado. I’ve been doing it for 40 plus years. And it’s the same traditions every year and it’s fun. I mean, you know, there’s always the the off year where it’s like what happened? You know what I mean? I mean, we I thought we were all in love like what the’s going on here? But that’s family. You know what I mean? That’s family. What’s your favorite Hudson family tradition? Well, we keep it very traditional in the sense that we decorate the tree on Christmas Eve and then we sit around the fire and read Night Before Christmas and and someone has chosen each year to sort of read Night Before Christmas. We’ve had some some doozies, some hammer people are like, “Oh god, this is going to be an hour and a half to get through this book.” And then what happens? Yeah. Yeah. It’s like sash is throwing up. I’m like, “No, no, it’s throwing up.” So anyway, but then it’s Merry Christmas to all to all. Good night. And the kids now are Pavlovian. It’s like they go right to the window because they know we have Santa that go that’s running ho ho ho with bells that are are like sort of beyond the tree light. So it’s like this silhouette and you see his and the person who plays Santa is usually the one who has kids who are older who are done or no kids. Gotcha. And it’s a real deal because you’re all suited up and you’re running in 3 ft of snow and you’re at 8,000 ft altitude and you’re borderline throwing up. But you guys go full out for Christmas. So it makes sense that you have actually become the king of Christmas cuz I was wondering what your personal relationship like was with Christmas and it seems like y’all got a good relationship going on. Yeah, very much so. What about gift giving? Like with all the siblings and stuff like how does how does that It’s nutty, dude. It’s like normally it’s like let’s just give each other a a gift and then we all go crazy and then it’s like a million gifts and it’s like I got another one and it’s become the tradition of just like not just one even though every year we always say hey guys we don’t need all this let let’s just go one and then you get to shopping like oh mom would love this oh and then you got all the kids and the cousins and it’s a huge family that way so most of the gifts are going to the kids it’s also where you just get so excited you’re like, “Oh, I want to watch them open this and that.” Like, it just feels like a rush. Well, that’s the thing. I mean, giving is better than receiving. Well, I mean, you never know. Well, yeah. Yeah. I guess it depends. You know, do we want to receive before we give or give before we receive? Now, that is the age-old question. Yes. When it comes to tackle that one, when it comes to gingerbread house building, was gingerbread house building also a tradition for you guys or did you just kind of get into that? No, we we we we we did. I mean, they were crap, you know? I mean, it was just like putting up walls together with the thing and then people would get bored being like, h in theory, this was fun, but now it’s not. But this competition, this hosting gig that I did, it is not gingerbread making. This is gingerbread art. I mean, it is beautiful. They’re 7 by seven pieces of of worlds that they’re building and the architecture is unreal and the precision is unreal and the feeling behind these villages they’re building was emotional. I mean, I’m a pretty sensitive dude, but I didn’t think that hosting a gingerbread show I would be crying. You were crying? Don’t cry on the gingerbread. What makes What makes you cry? They care so much and it means a lot to these people. And I found out that there’s national gingerbread championships. I mean, this is a real world and there’s 100 grand on the line. So, that means a lot. And uh, you know, they have their backstories and their family stories and how they got into it and why they want to win and what they would do with the money. And they get all emotional and of course I’m like, “Oh my god.” And then and then do you end up picking a favorite yourself? Were you like secretly rooting for someone from the beginning? Wow. Okay. Yeah. I love the girls first of all and then I also just love their world because the way it works is everyone has a theme. So it’s like coastal mid-century modern chalet. Oh my gosh. And they have to build within those parameters, you know. Cool. That’s awesome. And now do you because I mean they’re made of such delicious things. Do you have to eat it after? It’s all edible but it it isn’t. It is. It’s sprayed and you know I would take the chance. You know I did. Well, so when I was doing the hosting thing and just flitting around and, you know, just BSing with the thing, they would hand me little dough balls of these gingerbreads, but it was not good. And they would warn me. They’re like, “It’s edible, but you’re not going to like it.” But at least you tried. They were correct. A merry little X-Miss, Alicia Silverstone, Jamila J. I mean, this is so so such a fun cast. Melissa Joan Hart, I mean, this honestly is kind of like a ‘9s dream. How was it making this movie? It was really fun. It was really fun. My son was in it. Oh, that’s so cool. Which was an incredible experience for me. And Alicia was amazing. She’s just really fun. She was my I mean I my crush back in the day. Oh my god. With Clue when Clueless came out, I was like, who is that person? How do I find that that girl town? It was just beautiful. It was really fun and it’s a sweet movie, you know. It’s like these Christmas movies can go either way, you know, and this one is more of a traditional family oriented, you know, romcom, but it’s got some heart to it. And with your son in it, are you did you do anything very special when it premiered? Like, was he so excited to watch it or he he was not wanting anyone to see it because well, you know, I mean, it’s like watching yourself and it’s the first thing he’s ever done and he’s just like, how old is he? He’s 18 now. But he, you know, he’s he’s basically a man, but he’s like, “Dad, like the school.” And I talked to him yesterday like, “How was school?” He’s like crazy. He’s like, “Everyone was pulling it up on their phones being like, Wilder. His name was Wilder.” And I was like, “How was it?” He’s like, “It was fine, but you know.
