Prince Harry’s Remembrance Day trip to Canada was meant to honor veterans — instead, it’s kicked off a fresh round of palace-versus-Sussex drama. New reporting claims Buckingham Palace was blindsided by the announcement, despite Harry’s team saying they had notified royal officials in advance, according to People.

Harry traveled to Toronto earlier this month for a series of events tied to Remembrance Day, the U.K. equivalent of Veterans Day (and amid a semi-silly dustup over his apparent support for the Dodgers over Toronto in the World Series). But according to palace aides quoted in new reporting, the visit — announced November 3 — came as a surprise. That timing also happened to coincide with Prince William touching down in Rio for his Earthshot Prize week, prompting the usual scrutiny over whose engagement overshadowed whose.

Harry’s team, however, says the palace absolutely was informed in advance. Their position: the communication happened, and the surprise seems to be coming from inside the palace, not California.

The mixed messaging is striking because it comes just months after Harry reportedly offered to share his schedule with both Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace, which I covered in late July. That was a major olive branch meant to reduce exactly these kinds of clashes. Over the summer, insiders described that move as a “significant gesture” aimed at restoring harmony amid the King’s cancer treatment and ongoing tensions with Prince William.

That effort also followed a separate publicity clash earlier this year, when Harry’s unannounced trip to Angola dominated U.K. front pages the same day Queen Camilla’s 78th birthday portrait was released. At the time, royal aides were said to be frustrated by the overlap, and Harry’s willingness to coordinate future travel was seen as a major shift.

Now, the Canada confusion raises fresh questions about whether that attempted détente is actually working — or if the royal and Sussex communication pipelines remain as tangled as ever.

The palace has not commented publicly beyond indicating they were caught off guard. Harry’s camp is holding firm that the proper notifications were made.

With Harry continuing to balance life in California with global engagements, and the royal family navigating a slimmed-down roster of working members, even small scheduling misfires can spark outsized drama. This latest dust-up suggests that repairing the relationship may require more than shared calendars.
