Its lyrical content features themes of Adele "yearning for her old self, her nostalgia", and "melancholia about the passage of time" according to an interview with the singer by Rolling Stone, as well as themes of motherhood, new love, and regret. It even held the record of the most albums sold in a single week in the United States, with 3.48 million units, until October 2025.
The first single, Hello, was released on October 23, 2015, and is about nostalgia and regret. The second single, When We Were Young, was released on January 22, 2016. Inspired by the vision of meeting acquaintances at a party at an older age, it explores the fear of getting older and the loss of one's youth. The third single, Send My Love (To Your New Lover), was released on May 16, 2016, and is a "happy you're gone" song dedicated to an ex-boyfriend. The fourth and final single, Water Under the Bridge, was released on November 14, 2016, and is about forgiveness and details the crucial point in a courtship of determining whether one's partner is willing to put in the work to make it succeed.
