‘Full House’ actor Dave Coulier reveals tongue cancer diagnosis after overcoming lymphoma

So, in October of this year, uh, I went in for a PET scan, just a routine checkup, and something flared on the PET scan, and it turned out that I have, uh, P16 squamus carcinoma at the base of my tongue. That was actor Dave Koulier on the Today Show, revealing news that surprised both him and fans around the world. The 66-year-old Full House alum says he’s now battling tongue cancer just months after celebrating being cancer-free from lymphoma. Koulier explained this diagnosis came completely out of nowhere, but he emphasized something important. This new cancer is unrelated to the non-hodkins lymphoma he beat earlier this year. Koulier says doctors believe the tongue cancer may be connected to HPV, a virus he could have carried for as long as 30 years, which may have activated and developed into carcinoma. The good news, doctors told him the cancer is very treatable with a 90% curability rate and treatment has already begun. Koulier says radiation has been a whole different animal compared to the chemotherapy he went through last year. While it doesn’t feel quite as aggressive, he admits there are still plenty of side effects. And the experience, he says, is emotional, draining, and difficult not just for him, but for his wife, Melissa, too. The couple married since 2014, has been navigating this latest chapter together. Koulier shared the toughest part isn’t the physical battle, it’s watching the stress it puts on her. It was just last November that Koulier first revealed his stage 3 lymphoma diagnosis on today. Earlier this year he received the incredible news that he was in remission on the same day he became a grandfather. He called it an amazing day. But a routine PET scan 6 months later showed something suspicious leading doctors to discover this new HPV related oropharingial tongue cancer. In a strange twist, Koulier says the only reason it was caught early is because he had already been fighting another cancer. He calls it the silver lining in a very difficult situation. Still, through it all, Koulier remains, in his words, cautiously optimistic. He says he’s determined to make it to the other side of this and he’s using his story to encourage others to get checked early because it saved his life, not once, but twice. The thing that has really saved my life, Craig, is that uh early detection saved my life, not just the first time, but the second time as well. So, I hope you’re getting your checkups. I am. I hope I am, brother. Colonoscopies, breast exams, and prostate exams. They will save your life.

Dave Coulier is battling tongue cancer, months after announcing he beat lymphoma. The “Full House” alum shared his latest diagnosis on the “Today” show Tuesday, calling the news a “shock to the system.”

The actor, 66, clarified, “It’s totally unrelated to my non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This is a new cancer. I said, ‘Are you kidding me?’”
