Just in time for the holidays, Reese Witherspoon has announced that her December 2025 selection for Reese’s Book Club is the newly released novel The Heir Apparent. She described the choice as “the perfect escape” from the swirl of December, an invitation to dive into another world, far from tinsel and to-do lists.
In her announcement, which shared on social media, Reese summarized the premise: the heroine, Lexi, is a doctor finishing her residency in Tasmania when a tragic accident upends everything. Suddenly, after the death of her father and twin brother, she becomes first in line for the British throne. Now she must choose: embrace a life of royal duty or return to the quiet, fulfilling life she had built.
It’s a big, bold pick, full of glamour, heartbreak and tough decisions; a story that promises to carry readers away from holiday hustle to palace halls.
Inside The Heir Apparent
The Heir Apparent centers on Lexi Villiers, a young medical resident living in Tasmania, who has intentionally distanced herself from her royal roots. But when a helicopter lands with devastating news (her father and twin brother were killed in a skiing accident), Lexi is whisked back to Britain and thrust into the life she tried to leave behind.
According to Apple Books: “Returning to London as the heir apparent Princess Alexandrina, Lexi is greeted by a skeptical public not ready to forgive her defection, a grieving sister-in-law harboring an explosive secret, and a scheming uncle determined to claim the throne himself. Her recent life—and Jack—grow ever more distant as she feels the tug of tradition, of love for her grandmother, and of obligation. When her grandmother grants her one year to decide, Lexi must choose her own destiny: will it be determined by an accident of birth—or by love?”
For a December pick, when days get busy and your to-do list is spinning out of control, The Heir Apparent offers a lush, emotional escape. It’s the kind of story you can tuck into between errands or holiday parties and get lost in a world of royalty, romance and tough choices. Of the book, Reese says: “If you love royal family and you love secrets, the biggest secret in here is about her brother that I totally did not see coming.” Consider me intrigued (and adding to cart!)
At its heart, Reese’s Book Club has always been about giving readers, especially women, stories with heart, depth and female voices at the center.
This December, after the buzz around her November pick Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy, a book that drew acclaim and landed on major “best of the year” lists, Reese’s choice feels like an invitation to close out 2025 with something dreamy, dramatic and completely transformative.
