As Lowe noted, many watching at home didn’t see the “horror” that came over her face as she realized she had run out of time

Chad Lowe is recounting the look of “horror” that crossed his then-wife Hilary Swank’s face when she realized she had forgotten to thank him in her Oscars acceptance speech.
Speaking on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, 57-year-old Lowe recounted what happened after Swank, 51, won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2000 for her role in Boys Don’t Cry.
After host Steve Kmetko noted that Swank did not thank her then-husband in her speech, he then asked Lowe: “What was the car ride home like?”
“I can take you to that moment, and what people didn’t see is that as soon as somebody gets up there, they start flashing a countdown of like, 30 seconds,” Lowe said.

He continued: “The look of terror and horror on her face as they were basically ushering her off, because she recognized that she didn’t… I felt so bad for her. I didn’t even really think about it from my perspective. I just felt so terrible for her.”
“The first thing I said to her — she didn’t need to thank me,” Lowe added. “I mean, she’d thanked me enough. Yes, there’s an expectation publicly that you’ll do that, but I didn’t feel unappreciated. I didn’t feel, you know, taken for granted or forgotten at all. I just felt for her.”
Swank would go on to win the Best Actress Oscar once again, in 2005, for her role in Million Dollar Baby.

Swank and Lowe were married from 1997 to 2007.
The actress is now married to husband Philip Schneider. In April 2023, the Million Dollar Baby star announced on Instagram that the couple had welcomed a boy and a girl, Ohm and Aya.
Lowe, meanwhile, is married to wife Kim Painter and the couple share three daughters: Nixie Barbara, 8, Fiona Hepler, 12, and Mabel Painter, 15.
