Ariana Grande’s Viral Photoshoot – Photographer REACTS

Ariana Grande went from being Galinda to Glenda to back to Ariana Grande. And now she’s on the cover of Interview magazine. And people had a lot to say about this photo shoot of her. And it was either you loved it or you hated it. And if you hated it, we knew about it because there was a lot of comments. Hi, my name is Jessica Kesy. I’m a professional photographer and today we’re going to be looking at the cover of Interview magazine with the photos of Ariana Grande on the 564th issue. I’m going to be giving you guys my opinion as a photographer. We’re going to talk about the lighting, the posing, the makeup, the hair, everything that has to do with these pictures. You have to hit me in the face. Was that necessary? The rud. Now, before you start writing the hate comment that Ariana fans, Wait, I have to show you something. There it is. If you’re a fan, you’ll know that’s her. This is her eyeshadow. It’s a good eyeshadow, too. Can I just say great color applies nicely. Love it. Okay, so this is the interview magazine and it’s with Ariana Grande and Nicole Kidman. So Nicole Kidman interviewed Ariana for this for the article with the pictures and it says she caught up with Nicole Kidman for a therapeutic chat about fame burnout and why the best cure for chaos is a long bath. The photos are styled by La Roach and the photography is by Enz Van Lambs and Venude Metadine. I hope I said that correctly. This is the cover of the magazine. Now I have to tell you guys when I first saw the cover I I’m going to be honest. I thought it was distorted a I thought it was squished a little. I was like, did they like was someone trying to resize it or crop it or something and then distorted it a little? Like squished the photo a little? That’s what it looked like to me. I was like, oh, it’s just like a a bad re-upload. No, this it’s the actual cover. That’s how it was. So, I’m not sure why it looks squished to me. And I wasn’t the only person who thought this. I found a comment of someone saying the same thing as me. So, I was like, “Okay, I’m not just seeing things.” She’s wearing this red Furby inspired shirt top. Is it a top? It looks like Just looks like one giant. I’m like, is it a jacket? Maybe. Cuz I don’t see her hand anywhere in these. Just like a giant. Well, this looks like a hand right here. It looks like she’s doing this perhaps. Yeah. But where is her Her hand should be coming out here, but it’s not. She’s wearing these earrings. Also, I shot with a hat just like this recently. We shot with it two times. I’ll show you guys pictures of that. So, I think it’s really cool that I used something similar. It looks great on her. I actually really like it on her. Now, I will say I the lighting I don’t like. And I didn’t like the lighting as soon as I saw it. If you zoom in here, you can see it just something about it. I almost want it to be more contrasted than whatever this is. It’s like a little bit of a shadow. Why don’t you just either just go full just have it even lighting or just do like a harsher shadow? The retouching is very clean and simple, but just something about like this area here and then this area. I would have loved to have seen it go further with the lighting. Again, more hard light. If you zoom into Ariana’s eyes right here, you can see this is the light source. It’s way above her. Yeah. I mean, it’s it’s not bad, but I don’t I’m not like a huge fan of the the cover. It it just looks squish. It still looks squished to me. And I think also because you see this piece right here, how it’s covering some of the neck. Her neck almost looks cut off like this. This looks like she’s missing a chunk of her neck, which could be one of the reasons why it does look almost distorted or squished in because half of that neck is missing. See, if I did something like this, if I did something like this, it’s like you’re losing that neck, which creates the shape versus something like that. The hair and the the pigtails. I don’t know why for I don’t know why they did pigtails for this look with the I don’t I wasn’t there. I wasn’t there. The pigtails is a choice. The pigtails with the vintage hat with the Elmo top. It just It’s a little over the place a little bit. This is the unccropped version of the cover. They essentially just took this picture and then made the background black. They cut out this area, made it black, and then headed the words for the magazine. And that was the cover. And you can see, so I was wrong. She’s not doing this. Okay. I don’t know why it looked like that. Okay, this top is very would be so interesting had she shot it standing up. Then you have the socks with these giant platform heels. Okay, I don’t even mind that. But just again the hair I would have changed. I would have had her standing up doing movement shots in this. Something cool to show. I want to see the full top. But her just her sitting there kind of over it’s a little overwhelming. I don’t like this pose. It looks like her feet are just photoshopped on. It looks like her leg is just popping out of nowhere. You don’t see any of that shape. It just right now. If you look at it long enough, it does look photoshopped on. But this, I mean, I don’t even mind this. But again, the hair the hair is just not matching with this look. She looks so beautiful though. I love She’s gorgeous. I would love to photograph her. She’s beautiful. Also, look at this. Can you guys just That’s like a a piece of the chair. I don’t want to see the metal of the chair. Also, this line going through here from the from the backdrop. I would have just photoshopped that out. I just feel like that’s very distracting. It still reminds me that they’re in the studio. It’s like she’s again just like the Megan Markle photo shoot that I that I looked over. It looks like just a you’re still test shooting like, “Okay, did we get the lighting the way we want it? Okay, let’s do the actual photo shoot. Next shot. It looks like the same picture. Do you guys see the face? Wait, I’m going to line that up. That’s crazy. Okay, wait. Crazy that it looks like the same picture cuz her expression is almost the same in these. Look at that. From this to that, she looks amazing. I have to say I I think Ariana Grande is beautiful. The lines here in the back. I would have just photoshopped these out. You guys see these little lines down here from the backdrop? Would have taken two seconds or crop it out. Just crop it out. I love the styling in this one. This hat is so cute on her. And I love whatever this is. This dress minus how her hair is styled. So if you if I zoom in here, you can see this part of her hair is all dark. This part is completely light. It just feels like it it doesn’t flow right. We have again the shadows on her hair here. And then you see every detail over here in her hair. I would have just done a different type of lighting. I would have done maybe a beauty dish for this. I think that would have been nice. A bit of like more contrast is what I mean. And then I would have just cleaned this area up on her chin right here as well. Can you guys see that or is it just me? It’s probably just me, but I don’t know if you guys can see that right here. This patchiness right here. Crazy that it’s almost the same expression just from this to this. I would have had her just do something different. Maybe. I’m sure she did. I’m sure she did. Next photo. Wow. It’s the lighting. Look at right here. the shadow over here. It’s the lighting isn’t clean or smooth for me. Does that I don’t even know how to explain it. I I’ll show you guys examples. The side of her face is entirely in a shadow here. The left side of the photo is a little bit more in like this part of her face is in shadow and then this area here is in shadow. I kind of love that, but I if I’m going to see something like that, I want it to be a little bit more extreme, more contrasted. I love that she’s looking away. And I love this jacket on her. I would have have loved to seen it a little further away so we can see more of it. The expression is still kind of the same as the last two. And now she now it’s that same expression just looking to the side. But I’m glad that we switched it up. It’s It’s progress. It’s progress. Ariana did a photo shoot for S Swarovski and I love the lighting in that one and it’s kind of similar to this. So, let me quickly show you guys this lighting versus that. You see how the S Swarovski one is just cleaner and it’s softer? That’s what I would have loved to have seen for something like this. Photographer Mer Alas shot these. They look amazing. And I believe it looks like he used a beauty dish right there. that is looking a little bit like a beauty dish. So, I think the lighting was done so well for these. She looks absolutely stunning. And again, this is what I’m talking about when I’m saying it’s the lighting for these. Do you guys see the difference? Now, there are noticeable highlights in this photo versus this photo here. We see a lack of highlight. So, it’s a bit flatter. Like, the highlights are a little gray. Also, whatever this is, I don’t know. kind of distracting. I don’t know because it’s in full shadow. It’s in because of the lighting, so I couldn’t tell you. This jacket looks so gorgeous. Imagine this in color and she takes five steps back. Brilliant. This photo really threw me off because when I first saw it, I just thought, where’s her arm? It’s a movement shot. Her hair is in movement, but her arm is like to the side. It disappears in this outfit. And her expression is her expression is not bad, but it’s I feel like it’s too side profile. I would have have liked to have seen more of her face. The sleeves of this look fantastic. They’re from what we can see. Oh my god, my eyes are starting to hurt. Looks like camouflaged in there. If we can get through the camouflage of flowers here, we can see it’s a bell sleeve. almost a bell sleeve for this dress. And it would have been nice if she was bending her elbow, moving, and you can see the slee the shape of the sleeve. And then it’s the same backdrop for every shot where you just wa just edit AI use AI generative tool and remove that. I don’t know why they you have you have Ariana Grande in the studio. You can’t pull that pull the backdrop out to not have this. the styling so far. She’s This is like a 60s kind of look, but then we had this and we have the Elmo top. I’m just going to call it the Elmo top from now on. And then this. I’m not sure what’s happening with the styling. I mean, this the lighting the lighting is better in this one. At least we see more light on her face. That’s more even. There’s no weird shadows, but just the hand. It looks like she’s armless. It would have been nice if she was like like that. Something like it’s the Brady Bunch hair toss. Marsha. Marsha. Mara. You would get made fun of if you walked like that at school. I would know cuz I tried it one time and someone made fun of me. Let’s move more than Ariana Grande is doing. And look at the rest of these pictures. Okay. Why does Why is it always like the same p same pose two times in a row? Look. Why? It’s always the complete side of her face, too. We want to see Ariana Grande’s face. She’s beautiful. I want to look at her face. That sounds very creepy. That sounds creepy. But I The side profile, I don’t mind, but her looking away completely, you can barely see her eyeball. She’s She’s not connecting with us in this one. I don’t feel the I don’t feel the connection right now. Just like my Wi-Fi that went out this morning and the Tik Tok comments would not load. How can I really fully digest a video without seeing what the comments think? So now she’s in a plastic umbrella. I I don’t know why. Is it raining in the studio? Maybe. Was there a fire? I don’t know. Well, at least the lighting is nice in this one. Didn’t we just see this picture? Was it the same photo? that they’re different pictures. I’m so confused. Wait, this and that. Where are her arms? Why is she armless part two? I’m not I’m really not understanding. And why? Hey, I swear to God if I see this line in in one more picture, it looks like the same expression we saw in this and this and now this. Okay. Okay. I don’t know why I was that that was dramatic of me. Okay. The lighting looks a little better here now. It looks cleaned up a little bit more in this photo, which is better. And again, where I mean, where’s the shape to this photo? It just looks like it looks like this and then legs. Her hairstyle covers a lot of the detail of this dress, right? The bow, it’s just kind of flopped on this outfit. It’s covering so much of it. I don’t know that it really fits with whatever styling this is supposed to be. Ariana is so good at different expressions. I mean, she’s modeled for so many different magazines. I’ve seen her pictures. She’s amazing. I know that she can do more than just the same expression. This doesn’t look finished to me. The lighting, the even the backdrop still look, it looks like they’re just setting up. Another thing, look at the light on her face versus the light on her legs. This looks flat and it almost kind of blends into this background, right? And then her face is brightened up. It just it it’s very it’s it’s not balanced. That’s what I mean to say lighting wise. Her leg crossing over like this just reminds me of this photo where she’s kind of already done that before. Next shot. It just looks unfinished somehow. It And this backdrop, you can see it folded in. You’re working with Ariana Grande. I I would never have a folded in backdrop like this. Okay. It’s a lot of crisscrossing of the legs. And again, it’s just crazy to me that this backdrop looks like this. If I showed this to another photographer, they’d be like, “Why didn’t they edit that out?” We went from this vintage looking hat to now she’s wearing a straw hat. Okay, I’m very confused by the styling. Look, I’m not a stylist, but to me, I I would have just liked more cohesiveness with the looks in the era. What? I don’t It’s like the ‘ 60s, but then maybe we’re not in the 60s. Maybe we went in a time machine. We I don’t know. I’ve never been in a time machine before. Never have. I would. If you have one, let me know. Invite me. I’ll go somewhere else. Pipsy. I was wondering where you were. Hi. I was wondering where she went. She’s hasn’t been here this whole time. She’s usually following me around. Come here. Come here. No, don’t don’t eat the plastic bag. Wait, I don’t know what’s happening here in this picture. Is it a piece of hair? But is her hair that long to reach down here? Or is it a piece of the outfit? I’m so confused. Anyways, I have no idea what that is, but it’s distracting. That’s all I can look at now when I zoom out here. This jacket just looks a little too similar to this jacket. And again, she’s crunched up in it and it’s hiding a lot of the detail. I want to almost see more. I want to see this in movement with this. It would have been so cool had she been moving with it. But it just feels like she’s covering so much of her body and there’s just no shape to the photo. Next photo. This one’s my least favorite to be honest. her her expression. Not even just that, like her body looks cut off. Like at the bottom, look, you see her shoe and then you see her knee. She just looks I’m going to keep saying crunched crunched up. It looks just squished. That’s what it looks like. These photos look very boxy. There’s not a lot of shape. I expect a little more posing from Ariana cuz she’s such a she’s a good actress. She’s a great singer. She knows her movements. I wanted to see more of that. Like even when she’s performing, you can see she does like beautiful movements. So something like that in the photo shoot. Just copy and paste that into I you know what? If this were me, I would been like, Ariana, can you perform a song right now? It’s for the photo shoot. It’s for just start and I would start taking pictures. Can I request a song? Zooming in. Her eyes looked lightened up a little bit. Looks like there’s a reflective board next to her to bounce back some of that light and to fill in the shadows on her face. You can see the shadow is very light here. You zoom in here, you can still see the texture on her arms and over here. It looks like it to me it looks like this was cleaned up a little. Did she have a tattoo there? I don’t know. But this looks a little blotchy for some reason. Her makeup looks amazing in this. This is my favorite part of the photo shoot. The makeup just looks great. I think it it’s trying to match whatever the the concept is. They did a good job. Someone heard me complaining from beyond and have removed the the lines right here from the backdrop, which is what they should have just done from the beginning. Next shot. I love her pose and expression in this so much, but just the lighting doesn’t work with this photo for me. For me personally, this one is my most favorite out of the bunch. I would say her expression, her face looks great in this. I like the portrait a lot. This is a very cutesy type pose. Very like doll like, “Oh, was it me? I didn’t light that building on fire. It arson.” Never. Never. It wasn’t me. She could literally commit a crime and you know on her trial day she gives this look. She’s out free. She’s out free. Time served. Looks served and time served with this photo right here. That’s what this reminds me of. Like, oh, you want to uh prosecute me? Really? Are you sure? And she’s she’s out. She’s the prosecutor now. Now you answer to her. That’s what this picture reminds me of. This one’s like, “Oh, yeah. I might have committed arson, but I had to. It It was Yeah, it was me. Mhm. But you don’t have any evidence. That’s That’s what this picture is giving. So, it’s so random to me that they put her in a straw hat with this blue Elmo’s cousin from the Smurfs jacket. It looks like she’s wearing pigtails in this, but it just it’s weird because again, the hair just pops out randomly. It’s like a random It’s like a random gap with the backdrop there. And then the hairs, again, it’s just flailing over this outfit. This hat reminds me of Sophie from How’s Moving Castle. Like, oh, how? Oh, you know, I turned into a grandma. That’s what But I’m not saying she looks like a grandma, but in the movie, Sophie did become a grandma. She did well as a grandma. She should have She was doing good. She was a cute grandma. Overall, not my favorite shoot of Ariana Grande. Yeah, I think this this it was the styling not being really cohesive, the lighting being all over the place, like kind of flat on her like the shadows are were just a little bit too random for me. And then the but the posing was not strong at all. It was lacking shape and structure and I mean her arms were missing in some of these pictures and it’s just it looks too boxy. I think that wraps up the entire photo shoot, right? Just these picture. Oh my god, Pipsy. My cat just jumped. Hi. You scared me. She’s scared. My My heart dropped. I was like, “What is that?” Hi.
