Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie did not attend.
A total of 1,600 guests headed to Westminster Abbey from across the country, connected by the love and compassion “which binds us all at Christmas and all year round”.
They were each given the Order of Service, which included a personal letter from the princess thanking them all for their efforts.
During the poignant event, which was supported by the Royal Foundation and will be broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX on Christmas Eve, readings linked to the theme of love, compassion and connection were given by speakers including The Prince of Wales, Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Babatunde Aléshé and Joe Locke, whose reading was accompanied by pianist Paul Gladstone Reid.
This year, the future queen decided to honour the late Duchess of Kent, who passed away on September 4 at the age of 92, as young performers from Future Talent, a charity co-founded by Katharine, played music outside the Abbey.
