‘Emily In Paris’: Lily Collins & Ashley Park Reveal If Mindy Broke Girl Code For Dating Alfie
Lily, it only took five seasons, but Emily is finally speaking impeccable French. [laughter] >> It just comes out of nowhere, you know? It’s in those moments of uh of of emotion that she just blurts it out and then she gets called French, which is like the greatest compliment ever. >> Yeah, it is a moment where she’s like doing it off the cuff rather than like prepared thinking. >> We’re like she’s finally fluent. Yeah, >> the French are so rude. >> Oh my god, you think I’m French? They do. >> The trailer is so exciting. Fans cannot wait. It teases a new romance for Mindy and Alfie. So, Ashley, I have to ask, were you shocked to see Mindy breaking Girl Code? What I’ll say is that girl code is interesting because it’s not until your code is, you know, it can be se different for different friends and it’s not until it’s tested that you kind of figure out what your woman code is with each other. And I think that we get to finally um see both Emily and Mindy. I think the main girl code that’s broken is that Mindy’s kind of leading with fear for the first time. Fear of what Emily might think of her and they’ve never had a judgmental friendship or sisterhood. And so I think that is an unhealthy place that she’s coming from. But >> yeah, >> I mean I did not see that one coming though. >> We didn’t either. No, but the cool thing is that I think as surprised as the audience will be watching it, it’s just as surprising for the characters that are feeling those emotions. Nothing is like overnight. There’s real thought and nuance that goes into it, which obviously from a trailer you just see like you’re shocked, but when you really watch it, I think you understand and you feel for everyone, which I think is really beautifully performed by by everyone and and it’s very nuanced. >> Rome is so new [music] and exciting, but I have built a life for myself in Paris and everything is just going on without me. >> You know the saying, you can’t go home again. Well, you can. It’s leaving that’s the hard part. I know. I’m excited for the future. I think you should be, too. >> Well, I’m here for it. I love the romance in this show. But the real shakeup for Emily this season is the Bob. How did Victoria Beckham inspire the cut? >> I mean, well, the cut was inspired in my real life. Um, Gregory Russell, who has cut my hair forever, he was like, “We got to do a bob.” And I was like, “Great.” So, I did a bob. And then um Darren wanted to keep the bob, which I was super grateful for. And then when Marilyn sees my haircuts, it always kind of inspires her for that next season’s vibe for Emily, which I love. I love the idea of hair setting a trend. Um and so yeah, I loved it. I was very practical as well. Less time to dry, you know. >> You said that you were in your Posh era. >> Yes. >> Yeah. Do you still feel that way? >> Well, I hope I hope I never leave my posh era. Yes. I don’t I mean I hope [laughter] I I will say that when I was on set this season I I definitely was inspired with the the cut. >> Have you ever met Victoria Beckham? >> No. [laughter] >> I’ve never met her. >> Is she still backstage? Can we see if she’s still here? >> VICTORIA. LADY BECKHAM. >> WOW. WOW. [cheering] WOW. That’s cool. [cheering] Oh my god. >> I have to ask, have you come down from meeting Victoria Beckham on the Tonight Show? >> No. No. Haven’t come down. >> I will say what’s it was like the coolest and like most sweet humble thing about her because she was texting me in live. She was like, “Oh my gosh, Victoria was sitting right by by me on the couch and she just like she her inner child and fan girl came out so much and I was just like, Lily, do you understand how many people would feel that way about you sitting next to them and you you know, and so it’s she’s a beautiful person that way.” >> No, it was really >> absolutely fun. >> Well, when are we getting Victoria a cameo on the show? >> Maybe you ought to talk to Darren. I mean, I could market the I could market it. I could do I could do a good job and tell you now. >> Yeah, the Becca. Yeah, that’d be do whatever it takes to get back. >> Amazing character. >> I know. >> She’s very fashionable. >> Keep your attention on Murator, the business, [music] not the man. >> We want to make sure it’s something that people can connect with. >> Nothing excited me. >> I don’t think my ideas are translating, >> but Rome wasn’t built in a day. >> And yet, it only took you one day to destroy it. Well, speaking of fashion, I quickly just, you know, we got to talk about it because it’s its own character in the show. Um, I love this this look that you wore, this Venice polka dot look. How does it really capture the Italian DNA of the fashion this season? >> Thank you. That’s actually my friend um Stina Goya. She’s a Danish designer and I had her in last season and this look to me felt like so purely Italian. It felt very um Emily. It was romantic. It It just encapsulated everything that I wanted. Emily’s first experience in Venice to feel like. So I’m I love that look so much. >> The polka dots, too. It’s just it’s classic but like so fresh. >> Yeah. And last year Harris Reed for Nina Rishi was the black and white stripes and this year it’s the black and white polka dots and I just love that. >> I love the polka dot looks that you’re rocking. Uh you two, this is a fun scene. Ashley, tell me about this recycled red dress. What drew you to it? >> A lot of we we have a lot of conversations about fashion and sustainability um and that kind of thing. And so I actually really loved that dress. I wish I remembered. I should I should know all the designers for everything that I wear. But we put a lot of thought into it. And I think >> what oh for that outfit in particular, there’s a zipper that goes all the way down. And I we the story behind that it felt like first of all it felt very Rome and we loved we showed up to set and her scarf has a little bit of orange in it, but she’s ready to go. She’s in Rome now. It felt very like Roman sunset kind of colors. But at any moment that’s when like stuff is starting to bubble up with Alfie and she’s like I feel I could feel naked very soon very quickly right now and very vulnerable. So there’s always like a story about that. >> Love that. >> Yeah. And and Lily, you’re really rocking the power arrow with the power suit. >> I love the power suit this year. And you know what’s funny is that that suit is not the same designer as the one that Minnie Driver is wearing that’s sequined. But on the day that we filmed the scene where we both come into frame, Marilyn didn’t even realize that we were going to be wearing those suits in the same frame on the same day. But it looks like it’s Yeah. No, but when on set I was like it looks as if Minnie’s come in to just like swipe me out of the the offices and she’s going to be wearing something similar and it was just like the powersuit for me this year was was really important. >> I’m not done with Rome. I [music] need my Emily in Paris. in this world. Never give you up, never let you go. >> This is going to be fun. >> Goodbye. >> Maybe I don’t have to [music] try so hard. Maybe I can just let things be and it will all be fine. >> Before we go, one last question. You just wrapped your movie with Megan Markle. I have to know, what was it like working with her in her first return to acting in years? >> Oh my gosh. I didn’t even realize Megan was in it until the other day because because the leads are you and Bri. >> Oh yeah, Jack. Jack, Henry, Bri, and I, we had the the best time on that movie and and you know, we were so honored that Megan uh agreed to to be a part of it. We had such such fun with her. We all joked around on set and it was a really really wonderful experience. I’m very excited about that movie. >> I’m so excited. >> I can’t wait to see it. Thank you so much. Good to see you both. When Access Hollywood chatted with Lily Collins and Ashley Park ahead of the Netflix show’s Season 5 premiere, they revealed if Mindy broke girl code for dating Aflie after his split from Emily. Lily also explained how Victoria Beckham inspired her short haircut and broke down her favorite looks from this season. Lily also talked about working with Meghan Markle in “Close Personal Friends,” which marks the Duchess of Sussex’s return to acting after eight years.
