Thomas Markle has said there is “much to celebrate” as he has given a new health update after having his left leg amputated.
Meghan Markle’s father was rushed to the hospital earlier this month in the Philippines after suffering a blood clot that cut off circulation to his left leg.
Meghan has been estranged from her father since 2018, but she did send him a letter after multiple attempts to contact the 81-year-old following his amputation.
In a new update, Mr Markle has revealed he has begun the rehabilitation process, he said: “I have much to celebrate. I am doing well and would like to thank all the people from around the world who have sent well-wishes.

“I’m doing physiotherapy every day and have managed to sit on the side of the bed and even stood on my one remaining leg with the help of a nurse and a walking frame.
“That was a wonderful Christmas present. There is a long way to go but I am so grateful to the wonderful doctors and nurses who are taking such good care of me.”
Thomas Marke Jr has been attending to his father, who is now in a rehabilitation unit and spent Christmas with his father in the hospital.
He gave further insight on his father’s condition: “Dad’s doing remarkably well considering what he’s been through. Rose and I visited him for Christmas and took him a card with tinsel and a few sweets taped to the inside.
“He’s on a special diet and has had to drastically cut back on sugar but the doctors said he could have a couple of candies to celebrate Christmas.
“He was able to get out of bed and was taken by a wheelchair to a recreation room where he enjoyed food and entertainment with some of the other rehab patients.

“He’s in good spirits, grateful to be alive and working really hard to get better. He a brave man and is determined to walk again with the aid of a prosthetic leg.
“There’s a long way to go but we had a lot to celebrate this Christmas.” he told the Mail.
Meghan Markle and her father’s relationship deteriorated shortly before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, after Mr Markle arranged staged photographs with the paparazzi and subsequently withdrew from attending the ceremony due to health issues.

They have had limited communication since, and the 81-year-old has never met his son-in-law or his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Meghan Markle was initially believed to have contacted her father via email, but it was later revealed that the email account was no longer active.
In a video released after the surgery, Mr Markle issued a public appeal for reconciliation. He said he hoped his medical emergency might “help tear down the walls between us and bring our family back together”.
