Oprah Winfrey, Usher and Priyanka Chopra Jonas attended Ralph Lauren’s spring 2026 show in New York ahead of New York Fashion Week’s start.
Oprah Winfrey says her use of GLP-1s has helped her lose more than weight – she’s also lost her desire for alcohol.
Winfrey tells People that her days of being able to “outdrink everyone at the table” have dissipated in the two-plus years she’s been taking the weight-loss medication.
“I was a big fan of tequila. I literally had 17 shots one night. I haven’t had a drink in years. The fact that I no longer even have a desire for it is pretty amazing,” Winfrey tells the magazine.
Medical research has shown that common side effects of GLP-1s are dampened cravings for alcohol, nicotine and opioids. The medication is also being used to treat addiction.
Winfrey, who turns 72 on Jan. 29, credits the medication for improving her relationship with her “nothing but supportive” longtime partner, Stedman Graham, as well as giving her more energy.
Exercise also plays a significant role in her daily life, with two-hour workouts six days a week, usually involving cardio, resistance training, or hiking.
“I don’t recognize the person who feels sluggish when she doesn’t work out,” Winfrey says.
The media mogul is releasing a book with obesity expert Dr. Ania M. Jastreboff, “Enough: Your Health, Your Weight and What It’s Like to Be Free” on Jan. 13.
Winfrey says she started taking GLP-1s when she recognized that obesity isn’t about lack of discipline or willpower, but a medical condition to be treated. She knows the drugs will be “a lifetime thing” and sometimes takes her shots every 10 to 12 days instead of weekly because she can still feel the effects of the previous injection.
Winfrey cautions that those who start the medication need to edge into the journey slowly to avoid any major side effects. Hers have been minimal – “I had some digestion issues, so I have to drink enough water and take magnesium,” she says – but the payoff has been worth any inconveniences.
“I feel more alive and more vibrant than I’ve ever been,” Winfrey says.
