An up-and-coming boyband is set to release a song about life in a Derby suburb – written with the help of an A-list musician.
Absnt Mind are set to release their song “Allestree Lane”, which the young musicians have written with the help of Jamie Squire, the guitarist with world-famous band The 1975.
The band was founded in 2024 and is made up of Ashton, Alex, Freddie, Oscar and Conor, who all come from different parts of the UK, each bringing their own musical perspective.
Their new record, which will be released on January 30, will be about the pain and emotion of having to move out of a childhood home when family circumstances change, something that band member Freddie went through when leaving his childhood home on Allestree Lane aged 17.
Filming for the music video is set to take place on January 12 at Freddie’s childhood home, and the song can be pre-saved on streaming platforms already.
Freddie, who appeared on The Voice seven years ago, said: “This was an emotional trip down memory lane for me.
“When family circumstances change, you try to be strong for everyone. You put on a brave face and keep going.
“Sitting down with Jamie and the boys, writing this song, was so raw. I never realised quite how much the whole moving home thing had affected me and writing this song, reliving that time and the memories within those four walls at Allestree Lane, became an emotional process I wasn’t expecting.”
His mother Stacey added: “After an audition process with over 2,000 talented boys from all across the UK, Freddy was one of the successful five that ended up in the band.
“The boys all moved to London together in February 2024 and now share a big house there, but obviously this involved Freddy leaving the home he was born in, and then I decided to move away too.
“He was keen on writing this song based on his experience and feelings, and whenever the boys have played this song to people it has evoked real emotions. I cried when I first heard it.
“Freddy obviously grew up in Allestree and has done a lot of charity work, singing and dancing, over the years, so quite a lot of people know his story.
“The community has been behind him during all of this, and Freddy feels it’s a nice way to give back to them.”
“Allestree Lane” will be the band’s sixth single, which has been partly produced in London and partly at Jamie Squire’s home studio in Newcastle.
The guitarist praised the band, saying: “Writing with these boys was a real eye-opener.
“I had thought I would have to do the writing and they would just tell me what they liked, but from that first day when they walked into the studio, they knew they had an idea they wanted to explore and their creativity and talent, writing ability and sense of purpose just took over.
“They are very gifted songwriters.”
In the last 18 months, the band has written and released five singles, which have gained nearly five million streams across all platforms.
Next to their own headline gig, the boys also performed as opening acts for Olly Murs and the Sugababes, as well as opening Brighton Festival in the summer.
Their management has now released the lyrics to the song ahead of its release at the end of the month.
V1:
You blew out my candles with me
From my 1st to 17th
You know everything
Even what I’m thinking in my sleep
You’re my rock you’re my foundation
You know how to keep me warm
You taught me how to live
You taught me how to make a house a home
Pre:
I never thought my life would change with a for sale sign
Chorus:
They can paint the walls in my bedroom
Cover up my favourite shade of gray
Oh I guess I’ll have to live with this the hard way
I’ll move out
But I can’t move on from Allestree Lane
V2:
It ain’t only bricks and mortar
My heart’s inside those window frames
Oh I planned to leave it to my future sons and daughters
But plans have a tendency to change
Chorus:
They can paint the walls in my bedroom
Cover up my favourite shade of gray
Oh I guess I’ll have to live with this the hard way
I’ll move out
But I can’t move on from Allestree Lane
V3:
If I find time I like to wander
I’ll shortcut down to Allestree Lane
I’ll see them with their feet up on my sofa
They might as well just take the family name
Chorus:
Oh I promised to my mother when I’m older
I’ll buy the memories back for her some day
Til then I’ll have to live with this the hard way
It’s my house, it’s my home
Oh I moved out, but I won’t move on from Allestree Lane
