Zara Larsson is not shy about criticizing ICE and the agents carrying out violent immigration raids across the country. On Saturday, a few days after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis, the singer posted an Instagram Story that detailed all of the communities and things she loves: immigrants, abortions, “slutty women,” trans people, socialism, and “criminals.” To cap off the list, she wrote, “I fucking hate ICE.”
It turns out you can’t say all of that without getting some conservative backlash, which Larsson, who is Swedish, alluded to in a series of follow-up posts. In one, she asked whether ICE agents “feel really cool when they come home after a day of terrorizing communities and families?” and added that she thinks their job is to be “the most ridiculous evil clown on the planet.”
Another post suggested that it wasn’t even Larsson’s comments about ICE that made people upset but her inclusion of “criminals” in her list. Well, Larsson wasn’t playing about that either. “People in my DM[s] are like ‘aahhhh criminals?!?!?!?’ Girl YES, heavy on that,” Larsson wrote. She claimed that the reason her boyfriend, Swedish dancer Lamin Holmén, can’t come to the U.S. is because he “used to have a [criminal] record” in Sweden related to marijuana use. “It’s been so long since he smoked that spliff that it’s officially gone from his name and he still can’t get in,” Larsson shared.
“I’m just saying there’s thousands and thousands of people who go to jail and prison over none violent crimes like drugs, mostly black and brown people because of Ronald Reagan being racist in the 80s and fucking up communities,” Larsson continued. “Idk about yall but I’d rather have someone smoking crack on my couch than a fucking ICE agent ewwwwwwwww.”
On Sunday, Larsson kept right on posting, writing that she was confused why so many Trump supporters were upset with her for saying she loves criminals when “they voted for one… with 34 felonies… to become… the president?” She kinda got them there.
